If you are interested in pursuing your Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing somewhere in the Sunshine State, you have several fine MFA programs to choose from. Here are the top MFA programs in Florida.

Florida State University in Tallahassee offers an MFA program in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing. Students pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing at Florida State University must complete forty-five semester hours of course work, which include 21 to 24 hours of work in writing (including fiction, poetry, drama, article and essay workshops or writing seminar) and 21 to 24 hours in literature and related courses. The University of Florida in Gainesville also offers an MFA program. Their MFA program, begun in 1948, is one of the oldest creative writing programs in the country. The MFA program at the University of Florida typically takes two years to complete. It includes four workshops, three seminars, two electives, three reading tutorials, and a thesis. The MFA program in Creative Writing at the University of Central Florida offers workshop courses in fiction, creative nonfiction, scriptwriting and poetry. They also require literature courses in poetry and fiction, writing electives, and a thesis. In Southern Florida, you have three fine MFA programs to choose from. The University of Miami offers an excellent MFA program. Florida International University, which is also located in Miami, offers an MFA program, as does Florida Atlantic University in Boca.

Admissions requirements at these universities generally require a 3.0 GPA or higher in your undergraduate studies. You will also have to take the GRE, and submit a portfolio, which will include approximately twenty-five pages of fiction or several poems. Tuition at state schools is much less expensive if you reside within the state. So consider moving to Florida prior to applying to an MFA program. You are advised to apply early in order to be considered for the best financial aid packages available. All of the MFA programs mentioned above are traditional programs. There are currently no low-residency programs in the State of Florida.
