Mia Culpa - TODAY, July 1st, is Canada's Day of Independence (from Britain)
I was a Day OFF by Stating June 30th is Canada's Independence Day. Please Note JULY 1, 1867 is the Day of Notoriety/fame!
remind me of the wonderful reputation the Swedes have. I have always met the finest Swedes and Canadians, including on this site (such as Carol Roach on AC or www.AssociatedContent.com). It is therefore a pleasure to say, Happy Birthday Canada for July 1st 2009.
I visited Canada for about a month in 1990. I did research at the United Church Archives (specifically on Canadian Presbyterian Overseas Missions) in Toronto. The short version of this research focussed on the East Indians in Trinidad who were provided schools and medical aid as well, by Canadian missionaries. Such eminent names as Rev. John Morton and Rev, Kenneth Grant are recalled warmly by most Trinidadians, and especially by those of East Indian origin. Not coincidentally, Caribbean citizens/Islanders are welcomed as easily in the USA as in Canada, if their numbers and festivals (such as the pre-Lenten Carnival) are valid indices.
To this day, I maintain the bank account I opened at the corner of Bloor and West streets (?) at the Toronto Dominion bank. Their toll-free number allows me to keep this convenience and savings arm. (Thanks TD)
One of the first Canadians I met in Indiana was a lady who loved skiing. She was an opthamologist who studied at IU-Bloomington (Indiana University), and married a Scot. Almost every other Canadian I met thereafter has been generous and open-minded. Another Canadian was a fellow-historian I met at Ohio University (Athens) who hails from Alberta. Where else but Edmonston (LOL). However, at another website for writers owned by Pakistani-Americans, I was misquoted by one resident of Canada. Other than that almost forgotten scratch - to my ego and Canada's image - I venture that Canadians are generally wonderful ambassadors for their kind, compassionate and Indian-friendly nation. ("Indian-friendly" pertains to the granting of many more rights to the original Indian groups in Canada versus here in the USA).
Finally, Carol Roach on AC has been very supportive of my writing and I wish her a very special holiday on this Canadian birthday. She is always a kind and wonderful commentator, reader and friend to many. It also needs to be added that Canada played a very positive role toward South Africans of color during the tough decades of apartheid; Canada settled refugees (some of my friends) in Canada more easily than did many western nations. Thank you, O Canada! May the Maple Leaf fly high and red and white wave for freedom and compassion always! Shalom and Amen.
