Miami Vice (2006) Bored Me... So Disappointing!
Idea was Not Taken to It's Potential Making This Movie Confusing and Boring
Plot
To keep a long story very short - Sonny and Rico are cops that generally go undercover. They have been asked to help some other police department by going undercover to catch some drug sellers. Honestly, that's the best I can do since it was so confusing!!
Actors
Colin Farrell .... Det. James 'Sonny' Crockett - He was okay but I wasn't a huge fan. I couldn't understand his motives or his character. I felt like he was trying to be mysterious but there ended up being no hidden secrets there.
Jamie Foxx .... Det. Ricardo 'Rico' Tubbs - This guy is way too cocky! He was putting off vibes that he knows everything and can do anything, but when it came down to it, he couldn't back it up. He didn't know everything, he was just lucky!
Li Gong .... Isabella (as Gong Li) - She was the main bad girl in charge along with Jose (below). All I can say is, what did she say? Read below to find out more!
John Ortiz .... Jose Yero - This was the main bad guy in charge of setting up the deals with Jamie and Colin. I did like his character and felt he was one of the only actors that gave me anything to be interested in! He was kind of funny, and a good fit for the bad guy part.
Naomie Harris .... Det. Trudy Joplin - She was Rico's girlfriend as well a helper on the case. I liked her character too and felt she was pretty realistic. One of the only characters I wasn't annoyed with.
My Thoughts
I was very antsy while watching this, just couldn't sit still. That's usually an indication that I'm BORED! Let's list the reasons why I think this movie couldn't hold my interest:
1) I couldn't understand the lead girl 99% of the time! She was Asian, but the movie has her growing up in Central America so her accent was Asian/Spanish/Whatever but I couldn't understand her. A lot of times she said something that sounded like it was really important, but since we couldn't understand it, and we were too lazy to rewind, it kind of ruined the thrill for us.
2) There was more talking about action than actual action! They spent a lot of time talking about what they were going to do and preparing for what they were going to do, but when it came time to do it - they didn't do much at all. Which leads me to my next point...
************SPOILER IN POINT 3*****************
3) When there was action, it was too easy and convenient most the time! Everytime they had to go undercover or get involved in a bullet fight, it seemed like they won or tricked the enemy wayyyy too easy. I didn't feel any suspense and after awhile I just predicted that they would always win. Which was crap b/c the other side seemed to have way more technology, so it should not have been so easy for them to fool the enemy all the time.
***************END SPOILER****************
4) They could be around cops all the time! In most movies of this nature, characters have to really sneak around and be very cautious so as not to get spotted with cops. Yet in this film, Sonny and Rico were often seen in open areas with their own cop friends! That was dumb. I mean they already know these criminals have the best technology out there, yet they aren't staying undercover hardly at all.
Conclusion
I don't think there's any reason to continue listing things. Basically the movie just failed miserably. There were a *few* cool things, but overall it was confusing, there was virtually no suspense, and the only two characters I liked weren't even the leads! I did not expect this to be so boring so I was pretty disappointed. My husband had wanted to see it so badly, yet he started to fall asleep half way through. I had to keep waking him up when stuff actually happened. He doesn't fall asleep during good movies, no matter how tired he is, so I take that as a sign he didn't like it either.
I have not seen the TV show so I have no means for comparison, but I would strongly advise against this movie.

Post a CommentThis was a movie that really went against expectations of the audience. I was fine with this movie mainly because I had advance warning that it was nothing like the show. Uf you are familiar with Michael Mann's work, I think you will find a lot to like. At the same time, he has made better movies than this. Thanks for your review!
Yeah there were a few good scenes, but not enough to make this a good movie :( Too bad!
fairly boring...the scene with the hostage and the bomb stand off was good though
I think I watched this for a bit on TV. Nice article even if the movie doesn't cut it:)
I totally agree :) I never saw the original series but I just couldn't believe a movie with two great actors wouldn't be a hit!
I think Colin and Jamie are excellent actors, but they just didn't shine here. I think the roles were miscast, honestly, and their characters weren't given any good motivation. I felt like Jamie wasn't hardly even in it! I guess they were trying to go for the more gritty aspects of Miami Vice, but they needed more of the flash from the original series to keep people interested.
