As the world now knows, super star Michael Jackson passed away suddenly last Thursday, June 25, in Los Angeles, California of cardiac arrest. Reportedly, his personal physician tried to resuscitate his heart for about an hour but, sadly, was unable to revive him. Michael Jackson was transported to UCLA Medical Center in West Los Angeles, where he was pronounced dead.
Since that time, the media has been covering the death of Michael Jackson virtually nonstop. This is understandable given the fact that, as Sun-Time columnist Richard Roeper says, Michael Jackson's death is "the most shocking death of an entertainment superstar since John Lennon in 1980."
From the time Michael Jackson burst onto the scene as a member of the Jackson 5 singing group, he has been recognized as a musical genius. Michael Jackson's talent was immense and his influence on pop music was immeasurable. Thus, it comes as no surprise to this writer that the death of Michael Jackson would receive an enormous amount of media coverage.
But some argue that the intense media coverage of the death of super star Michael Jackson has been too excessive. For instance, The Daily Evergreen argues that many people have a "morbid fascination" with celebrity. And while The Daily Evergreen does not deny that Michael Jackson's death is newsworthy, it does argue that it should not be treated as if it were akin to the "fall of the Berlin Wall."
The list of celebrities who died during the month of June 2009 is astonishingly long. It includes "Tonight Show" sidekick Ed McMahon, actress Farrah Fawcett, product pitchman Billy Mays, comedian Fred Travalena and actress Gale Storm. I cannot remember a time when so many celebrities have passed away in such a short time span. It's truly mind boggling.
It's gotten to the point where I'm wondering, Who's next?
