Legacy comes at you from beyond your time, it comes to us from angles we don't see, it comes at us from places we can't envision about our life and what it means. Michael Jackson meant innovation on a level that began to define that term. From one sweeping enormous artistic change to the next, his power to make people feel the impact of his musical concepts, changed peoples closed mindedness when it comes to inconvenient pain. Michael represented the less loved aspects of our nature; he confronted the hypocrisy of racism in dramatic and powerful sweeping gestures that used the enormous power of his art in making people feel into the scene. While some chose to call his approach, too extreme; those same commentators missed the huge impact that his conceptual albums were having. One of Michael's enormous legacies will be his willingness not to be, normal.
Now at the time when family, friends and fans mourn so deeply this loss it is almost unfeeling to say this, but Michael deserved another shot, he was planning a tour, and the absolutely disappointing fact of his hugely sorrowful departure is that the tour won't get seen. We know that it would have been another design and art changing adventure for the fans. From lighting shows that edge laser technologies onto levels of quantum physics challenging arrays, to gigantic statues displayed in awe inspiring shows; Michael took us to new levels of concert wonder. It has value to everyone to continue to say thank you to this incredible visionary.
Michael blessed us, now we, in turn, can bless his legacy and others by bearing some semblance of class about this unfortunate time. It is true that Michael was attacked by gigantic forces in the industry that he sought to bring to terms, never forget, that Michael was fighting a universal sized war against mediocrity and sameness that confronts a world pushed into that direction. He refused to go quietly, refused to be the same, refused to become something rather than being someone. If we take that idea into our hearts then we will in some fashion find that the bland and compromised lives that we usually wake up to are suddenly invigorated with a newly defined edge.
