Michael Jackson : Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

Karen Meeker
Whether you agree or disagree with Michael Jackson's actions and choices in recent years, if you are a true music lover, there is no way you can deny this icon has talent. Looking solely at his musical career, Jackson has set numerous records and won many awards for his music. According to the website allmichaeljackson.com he has actually won more awards than any other artist ever. That being said, it amazes me that former fans, the entertainment industry, and the media, try to take away from what he so obviously gave the world.

Michael Jackson began his adult solo music career in about 1979 with the album "Off The Wall" which was a large success both in and out of the United States. Jackson soon followed up with the world's largest selling album of all time,"Thriller". Along with the title song, this album contained legendary songs such as "Beat It", "Billie Jean", and "The Girl is Mine". This album lead to Michael winning several Grammy awards, commercial contracts, and almost instantaneous fame as a leading solo artist. Michael continued with his solo career in creating albums such as "Bad", "Dangerous", and several others. None of them were ever as big as "Thriller", yet they certainly became well known throughout the world.

Jackson was not only concerned with how much money he could make with these albums. Many times he was trying to send a message to his listeners. For example, his song "Man in the Mirror" relays a message of making a difference and helping to make things right in the world. This is one of several examples of his heartfelt messages. I know as a teenager listening to Jackson's work that if his song said to make a difference, I was all for it. He had a profound influence on my thoughts as a young teen in America and at that time, it wasn't at all negative. Certainly, this had to be true for others that enjoyed Jackson's music and are now adults.

Along with the messages in his music, Jackson gave to the world in other ways. In 1992 when Jackson was touring the world for his "Dangerous" Album, he visited countries that had never had a pop or rock artist visit them, reports the website allmichaeljackson.com. I can not even begin to imagine how important that had to of made those people feel. Jackson also set up and organization known as, The Heal The World Foundation in 1992, with a focus on making children in the world a number one priority.

As you can imagine, I endure a great deal of debate and ridicule when the subject of Michael Jackson comes up and I come forth with my reasons for still being a fan. However, during those debates, it is rare that at some point the other person does not come around to agreeing that Jackson has talent. That is the only point I was trying to make when the discussion began. Do I agree with all of the choices he has made, absolutely not, but then again, he has never once asked my opinion on his choices. As for his music, I think it has merit and I am willing to dig out my Michael Jackson Cd's from time to time without shame. To those of you that have buried them in a cupboard even though deep down enjoy the music, I challenge you to dig them out and really listen to this talented artist with your head held high.

If you include his work with The Jackson Five, there is no way you can deny he was a talent and innovator. Odd choices, yes, but musical icon as well.

Jackson is a great musical talent... I no longer contribute to him by buying his stuff, though.

Great article! I've always liked Michael myself, but like you, don't always agree with everything he's done offstage. But, there's no denying, he's up there with all the greats!

Fair enough..the great thing about our country is the freedoms. Thanks for reading !

I meant to say disagree, of course.

Very well written article, but I couldn't agree more. There are so many artists that have produced far more quality music over a longer period of time, for example, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles (even any of them individually and Paul McCartney is still going strong), Diana Ross, so many others I could site. There's no reason to support a washed-up pedophile.
