Michael Jackson Still on Top on the Anniversary of His Death

Fans Keep MJ Alive Long After His Death

Michael Jackson's death on June 25, 2009 came as a shock to many, with an untold number of fans mourning his passing. Friday marks the first anniversary of the pop star's death, and fans continue to memorialize him around the world. How will those fans be honoring MJ on the first anniversary of his death?

A blog on Entertainment Weekly is open to reader comments, where fans and foes alike are posting what they'll be doing to honor MJ. Some comments are crass and downright ugly (notnarb comments that he/she will be dangling a baby from the balcony), whereas others pay homage to Michael in a more genteel fashion (Louis Gonzales says "God bless Michael Jackson! God bless his blessed child like spirit! God bless his children and mother!").

Social media sites aren't taking a back seat during the anniversary week of MJ's death. A search of Michael Jackson on Facebook yielded over 500 results for various pages and memorials set up in MJ's honor, with tens of thousands of people '˜liking' those fan pages. Tweets abound on Twitter with fans tweeting about MJ, prefaced with hashtags such as #wemissmj, #remembermichael, #ThisIsIt, and #MJFam, among others.

According toTMZ.com, many restrictions have been set up at Forest Lawn to keep Michael's final resting place from turning into a circus - no doves, no balloons, no overnight camping allowed. Vendors hoping to cash in by peddling MJ memorabilia will also be disappointed. What's left for fans to do?

Many will likely be glued to the tube on June 25th as numerous television specials are scheduled, including an interview of MJ's family conducted at Forest Lawn by Larry King that will air on the anniversary at 9:00 p.m. ET. (Catch a sneak peak of the Larry King interview of Jermaine Jackson here).

One writer penned her connection to Michael Jackson in the 70s, long before all the negative images. Magnolia Miller's account Michael Jackson: The World Remembers the Man - I Remember the Boy shares an impressionable teen's personal glimpse of a young Michael who played cards and watched cartoons, in the days before becoming cartoon-like himself.

Michael Jackson may have died on June 25, 2009 but love him or hate him, MJ is still very much alive in 2010, thanks to his millions of fans.

  • Lyn Lomasi6/25/2010

Excellent article! Some things people say about him may or may not be true. But I doubt anyone could honestly say he was not talented. He may be physically gone, but his spirit and his music will live on forever.

Michael is mourned the world around he was a great musician, had a great heart, and was by no means as horrible as some would like the public to believe. His loss is still hard to believe.
