Michael Jackson: My Tribute to the King of Pop King Gone to Meet the King of Kings

Nneka
I could not help but cry uncontrollably as I watched today's events transpire, as Michael Jackson the philanthropist, the dancer, the singer, the choreographer, the father, the brother, the uncle, the son, the entertainer, the all to those who knew him personally, and the epitome of human kindness to millions of people who adored him, was celebrated today at the Staples Center. I wanted to pay my own tribute to him, since I was not able to be one of the lucky lottery winners who got tickets to witness the memorial live.

I thought about how I could pay my tribute to this man whom I never met, but whose songs and acts of kindness to fellow humans touched me, and I could not come up with anything that is befitting. I do not know how to sing; else I would have belted out a tune for him. I do not have the luxury to benefit charity as he did. But there are things that I can do to honor Michael's memories. Money is not the only thing he gave. He gave hope, love, affection, friendship, understanding, and passion through his music. We can each do a little version of what he did by showing love to others, by being compassionate, and by spreading messages of hope, peace, and unity.

Because of Michael, I promise to be kinder to people whom I otherwise will not normally show kindness. The poor and lowly among us whom Michael often sang about, like when he wanted to "heal the world" through love, generosity, tolerance, hope, help, unity. I pray for the inspiration to carry on Michael's message by simply "living" and not just "existing."

I decided also to reflect on some of Michael's work by looking at some of the messages he left through his songs:

Heal the World: "stop existing, start living"

Black or White: "it's not about races/ (or) where your blood comes from/ (it) is where your space is"

Man in the Mirror: "If you wanna make the world a better place/ Take a look at yourself and then make a change"

Thriller: "'Cause this is thriller/ "No mere mortal can resist the evil of the thriller"

Off the Wall: "So tonight gotta leave that nine to five upon the shelf/ And just enjoy yourself/ Live your life off the wall"

Don't Stop Til You Get Enough: "Keep on with the force don't stop"

Billie Jean: "And be careful of what you do 'cause the lie becomes the truth"

Beat It: "It doesn't matter who's wrong or right/just beat it, beat it"

Will You Be There: "I'll never let you part/ For you are always in my heart."

May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace Micahel. Adieu mon ami, adieu!
