Michael Jackson's 3-D Movie to Be Broadcast at Grammy Awards

Even After His Death, the King of Pop Keeps Contributing Innovation to Music and Popular Culture

A 3-D Michael Jackson film will be one of the highlights of the 2010 Grammy Awards. The 3-D Michael Jackson film for his song entitled "Earth Song" will be the centerpiece of a Michael Jackson tribute at the Grammy Awards. The tribute itself will include performances by Smokey Robinson, Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion and Carrie Underwood.

Even seven months after Jackson's untimely passing, the 3-D film promises to be the latest example of a groundbreaking moment in a life and career that was full of them. Never before has a portion of a nationally televised awards show been presented in 3-D, though it is clearly the future for television and movies. Earth Song will almost certainly go down as the highest rated 3-D presentation in history.

Jackson built his career by introducing new concepts, some obvious and some subtle, to the entertainment industry and the world at large. The landmark Thriller video was the first of its kind and has influenced generations of music video producers and musical artists and transcended the music and video worlds. Thriller, in fact, is now the first music video included in the United States' National Film Archive. Jackson's dance moves were never seen before (or since really), but have already influenced two generations of fans. Finally, his ability to fuse hip-hop, dance and rock music into something greater than the sum of its parts are, to many, at the core of what made Michael Jackson's talents so special.

While Michael Jackson is no longer with us, his legacy continues to grow though technology, the strong support of his massive worldwide fan base, and the legendary performers who revere him and his contributions to music and pop culture. The 3-D film is in many ways the logical next chapter to Jackson's portfolio of innovations and leading edge entertainment.

As the nation watches the Earth Song 3-D mini movie during the January 31 Grammy Awards, it will be watching the latest innovation introduced to the world by Michael Jackson, and the first really since his death in 2009. It will be interesting to see how quickly music video producers follow the lead of Jackson, yet again, and start using 3-D technology in their videos.
