His demeanor stays focused, seasoned and calm week after week. Anyone who attempts to pull of Freddie mercury and succeed, deserves to hold the title, American Idol. Johns gave American Idol a quote for his profile and it read, "Better to be a has been than a never was." I feel he is not going to be either. He is rising to the top with his mind fiercely focused on winning this competition.
Michael Johns has shown his remarkable talent, but he needs to watch his back in the remaining weeks of American Idol, as there is one more contestant that could very well rip this competition from him, and that is David Cook. David brings diversity to the table with every song he performs, never keeping it like the original, making him unpredictable and dangerous for competitors.
I think what we are going to see in the coming weeks, is a head to head face off with these two men in the competition. Johns and Cook are running to the finish line with a vengeance. This is going to make American Idol an exciting show to watch. Just when I thought American Idol had lost me, these two kick it into high gear, for the chance to become the next American Idol.
Michael Johns musical influences are The Beatles, Neil Finn, Queen, Otis Redding, INXS, David Bowie and ACDC, to name a few. What I think we need to see from Johns is the ability to switch things up a bit and perform something a bit more edgy, like AC/DC. Although he has seemed to master Queen, it is becoming quite predictable for viewers to guess what Artist he may perform next.
This season of idol has started out boring, with so many ballads and oldies, that we are not able to see the strengths vocally with these contestants. I want to see a bit more rock among the contestants. We already know what they are capable of when throwing in a Beatles song or Carly Simon love song. What can they do with a band like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin or Alice Cooper?
I feel that David Cook has this advantage over Michael Johns, in the fact that he can add spice and edginess to a song like "Billy Jean" from Michael Jackson, who knew the song would sound better with an alternative ballad sound? Get your motors running, Michael Johns, David Cook is sneaking up behind you. The results show will air tonight at 9/8c on FOX 11.
