Michael Malone, Plot Juggler Extraordinaire

I Laughed, I Cried, I Stayed Up Reading All Night

Amy Gibbons

It is hard for a person who loves reading and books to choose a favorite novelist. First I arbitrarily eliminated Mysteries, Science Fiction and Fantasy. To choose an author as a favorite, I looked over my bookshelves for something I have read and enjoyed more than once. It needed to be an author I have shared with friends. Some were good, but Michael Malone is the best and even better he is still writing.

"Handling Sin" was the first book I ever read by Michael Malone. The book drew me in like quicksand and the next thing I knew it was 3:00 a.m. and I had to get up in three hours. It was occasionally laugh-out-loud funny. The many plot lines were varied and resolve themselves in an amazing way, which made me wonder if life is really that serendipitous.

Having fallen in love with "Handling Sin," I proceeded to read his previous books starting with "Dingly Falls" and continued to read through everything I could lay my hands on. They were amazing, absorbing, amusing and very human.

When I read the author notes on the dust jacket I discovered that he was a head writer for "One Life to Live" and had received an Emmy as well as several Emmy nominations. I thought that was where he learned to keep several story lines going at once, until I checked the dates and found the books came first. Not only has he won an Emmy he has also won an O'Henry Award, as well as an Edgar and the Writers Guild Award. He is an acknowledged talent as an author.

Michael Malone has written articles for several magazines in addition to his novels. He was educated at Carolina and Harvard and has taught at Yale, the University of Pennsylvania and at Swarthmore. He is currently a professor of Theater Arts at Duke University. There is a video of him at You-Tube @ DukeReads:Michael Malone on Dashiel Hammett's 'The Maltese Falcon' He is a multifaceted, talented man who can weave a good story.
