Debbie Phelps, mother of Olympic gold medalist swimmer, Michael, walked the runway Wednesday night with celebrities such as Christie Brinkley, Rose McGowan, Rebecca Romijn, and Minka Kelly. Sitting in the front row was her son, taking in all of the beauties donning gorgeous designer gowns in various shades of red. The fashion show kicks off New York Fashion Week which begins on Thursday. Over 90 designers are expected to show off their collections.

Many designers created red gowns for the models participating in 10th annual Red Dress Collection by The Heart Truth. Oscar de la Renta, Marchesa, Jason Wu, Donna Karan, Tadashi Shoji, Diane von Furstenberg and Badgley Mischka all participated in the event which takes place on the eve of the debut of the 2012 fall collections. The proceeds benefit an organization that educates women about the risks, symptoms, and prevention associated with heart disease.

Many people are unaware that heart disease is the number one killer of women. Bobbi Brown, makeup artist and cosmetic company founder, was unaware of the statistic before she began collaborating with The Heart Truth seven years ago. She wants to send the message that this often fatal disease can be avoided if one knows what to do to change lifestyle habits, get regular screenings, know family history, and be aware of symptoms early enough before they become more serious conditions.

Many stars such as Gloria Estefan, Jenna Elfman, and Chaka Khan became involved because they lost a loved one to the disease. The Heart Truth does report that in 2009 over 48% of women were discussing heart disease issues. This is a significant increase from 30% in 1997. If events and benefits, although entertaining increase awareness and save lives, these high profile women will continue strutting their stuff in gorgeous red gowns for as long as they are needed.

Mrs. Phelps, looking radiant in a gown by Adrienna Papell, was the most envied model of the evening. During her sashay down the catwalk, she stopped and received a kiss from her famous son!
