Michael Phelps Wins First Gold Medal

Michael Phelps is well on his way to becoming the most decorated Olympian in history, after winning the gold medal in the 400m Individual Medley. Phelps placed first in his qualifying heat, setting a new Olympic record of 04:07.82. Incidentally, Phelps set the old Olympic record for the 400m Individual Medley in the 2004 Olympics held in Athens.

Besides winning the gold in the 400 Individual Medley, Phelps also demolished the World Record and his newley set Olympic record with an outstanding time of 04:03.84. Phelps had also set the World Record at the Olympic Trials in Omaha, NE on June 29th of this year. Phelps will have the opportunity to set more records and win eight more events, including the 200m Freestyle, 200m Butterfly, 200m Individual Medley and the 100m Butterfly.

Phelps' fellow teammate, Ryan Lochte, placed third in the 400m Individual Medley. In the race following the 400m Individual Medley, which was the 400m Freestyle, fellow American Larson Jensen won the bronze.

With the leadership of Michael Phelps, Team USA's male swimmers will continue to dominate throughout these Olympic games. The world can expect to hear the American National Anthem played over and over again, thanks to this fine athlete.
