13 Total Gold Medals for Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps has proved himself unstoppable in the Beijing 2008 Olympics. On Friday evening, August 15th (if you go by United States time, otherwise Saturday morning in Beijing, China), Michael Phelps won his seventh Olympic Gold Medal for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

Phelps actually wasn't in first place for the whole race. Milorad Cavic was actually ahead of him. But then, at the last second, or fraction of a second more accurately, Phelps somehow took the gold. Milorad was coasting in to the finish, with his arms outstretched and he was just about to touch the wall. However, Michael Phelps took his last stroke, and his arms came up over top and he touched the wall first. It was an exciting Olympic moment to witness.

To anyone watching the event, it was a very close call. Milorad seemed certain to win, until that last second. Michael Phelps came from a good bit behind with some incredible power strokes that allowed him to close to the finish first. Way to go, Phelps.

Michael Phelps thus won his seventh gold medal on the 100 meter butterfly event. This ties him for the all time record of Mark Spitz for seven gold medals and one Olympics. He already took first place for the most overall gold medals before today's event.

Phelps has one more race to go, the 400 medley relay, the butterfly leg. Everyone is hoping he can win that eighth gold medal and beat Mark Spitz's record. Good luck, Michael Phelps!
