Michael Strahan Calls it Quits

Michael Strahan has left a big mark on the NFL, maybe even bigger than the gap between his two front teeth. Known for his power and quickness to the quarterback, Strahan will be hanging up the cleats as the NFL's all-time leading sack man, after he announced that he has played his last game in the NFL. Strahan registered 141 ½ sacks over his 16-year career, all of which he spent with the New York Giants of the AFC. He has accomplished all you could hope for in a career, and now has his eyes set on a position as an NFL analyst next fall.

Now that Strahan has lined up for the last time, it gives us a chance to reflect on what impact he has made on the game. Unfortunately, for many, his legacy will most noticeably include that fateful day against Green Bay when Brett Favre "handed" Strahan the all-time record for sacks in a season.

Whatever others might remember, his true fans and supporters will remember February of 2008 when Michael Strahan and the New York Giants lined up against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLll in an epoch battle for the ages. Strahan had hinted at retirement before the 2008 season but his desire for a ring is what motivated him to take one more shot at it. And it is a good thing he did. After pulling off a thrilling 17-14 victory of the previously undefeated New England franchise, Strahan can now revel in the fact that he has the hardware to go with his accolades.

As time rolls on, it seems that NFL players get bigger and better. Michael Strahan has had the build and the brains to put his name in contention as one of the best pass rushers in NFL history. Lawrence Taylor, Reggie White, and Merlin Olsen are among a few defensive linemen who have been mentioned in the coveted list of the best of all time. Strahan has to be on the top of the list. As time rolls on and these athletes just keep getting better, it is even more amazing when one player, like Strahan, can completely set himself apart from the rest.

So next time you have a conversation around the table with your buddies, and you are throwing around names of pass-rushers who have been at the top of their game, remember that Michael Strahan has now cemented his name on the top of that list, and when Canton comes calling, he'll be ready to answer.
