Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony Wins Three Grammy Awards

Pat Bartels
Three classical Grammy awards went to the album recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 and the Adagio from Mahler's unfinished Symphony No. 10 done by the San Francisco Symphony conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas.

The album won Grammy awards for Best Classical Album, Best Engineered Album, and for Best Choral Performance. The choral performance was performed by the Pacific Boychoir, the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and the San Francisco Girls Chorus.

This must have been a thrilling accomplishment for all involved. I can't say enough good things about Michael Tilson Thomas. Unfortunately I have never seen him conduct the San Francisco Symphony. I have, however, seen him conduct The New World Symphony many times.

I admire Mr. Thomas immensely. He does so much for classical music. Among his many accomplishments is being the founder of the New World Symphony which is an orchestral academy of very gifted young artists. Each year the New World Symphony holds auditions in various parts of the country in order to offer fellowships to their academy. For a young musician to become a member of the orchestra they must hold a degree from a university and of course be accepted based on their audition performance.

Fellowships are granted for up to a three year period. The fellows receive room and board and a stipend in exchange for getting experience in playing in a professional setting. There is the added bonus of being in Miami Beach. What better place to be for young adults than the beautiful South Beach area. They are housed in two old renovated hotels just two blocks from the beach. All throughout the year guest conductors and performers from other symphonies and orchestras from around the country come to perform and give master classes to the students. Usually during the year the symphony will travel to perform in other locations. They have played in Carnegie Hall, Rome, and Paris just to name a few of the places that they have travelled.

If you're ever in the Miami area and The New World Symphony is playing, be sure to take time to attend one of their performances. Some of their performances are very inexpensive to attend and many are free. You won't be disappointed and it's an extra treat if Mr. Tilson is conducting. Congratulations to the San Francisco Symphony, the choral groups, and Michael Tilson Thomas for their Grammy awards. I can't wait to hear the album.

I love Michael Tilson Thomas as well. I used to live in San Francisco, and loved going to the symphony.
