Michael Vick Gets Second Chance

NFL Commissioner Reinstates Michael Vick

After two years of being out of football and 19 months in prison, Michael Vick got some good news. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell decided to reinstate the former Atlanta Falcon quarterback and then suspend him for four games.

The move will enable Vick to attend training camp before serving his suspension.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Vick will be conditionally reinstated early next week and then immediately suspended for the four games. It was also reported that Vick was warned by the commissioner that any further trouble would result in additional punishment.

All of this is good news for the embattled quarterback who reported to have been considering options to play in the newly formed UFL.

The conditions that Vick will be subject to will allow him to sign with a new team, attend training camp and participate in the preseason, which is just what the doctor ordered for someone who hasn't picked up a football for two seasons.

Public opinion has been divided on whether Vick should even be allowed to play football in the NFL again but it appears that commissioner Goodell has erred on the side of leniency. He could have suspended Vick for most, if not all of the 2009 season.

Many fans and bloggers thought that Vick should never be allowed to play in the league again.

There is no doubt that Michael Vick committed a serious crime. Conducting dog fighting is a felony in all states with the exception of Idaho and Wyoming. Vick has admitted his guilt, although not at first. He has served his time and now has been given a second chance to play a game he obviously loves and is gifted to play.

Whether he should have been allowed to return to the NFL is something that will undoubtedly be debated for a long time to come. The fact is, Vick has been given a chance to make a fresh start, something that many professional athletes don't get.

Let's hope that Michael Vick shows true appreciation for the opportunity that he has been given by leading an exemplary life from this point on, both on and off the field.

The Philadelphia Eagles have given Michael Vick another chance. But, I still think he is a knuckle-dragging neanderthal. If Vick doesn't lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl win (if we have an NFL season this year), perhaps the management should consider sequestering him in a cave for the off-season. His rations should be limited to dog-food out of a rusty can!
