For the first time since the days of Jackie Kennedy, Michelle Obama has brought a true sense of style into the White House. This isn't to say that such former first ladies as Nancy Regan or Hilary Clinton performed their respective roles any less admirably than Mrs. Obama, but neither had the flare or fashion sense of the current White House matron.
Jackie Kennedy was the original fashion icon in the White House. She was known as a worldwide fashion symbol and her look inspired women to try and replicate it themselves. Kennedy was the embodiment of grace and her elegant style reflected this nature.
Now, in 2009, the United States has a First Lady who rivals Jackie Kennedy's fashion sense. Michelle Obama has a keen eye for hip trends and, along with her almost always stylishly dressed husband, has brought fashion back to the White House.
Whether meeting foreign dignitaries or addressing throngs of American citizens, Mrs. Obama is always impeccably put together and fashionably accessorized. She employs the use of scarves, jewelry, and even lavender toy watches (for the recent vacation) with accomplished skill.
One of the reasons Michelle Obama is the national fashion icon is her ability to pull off an array of looks. She looks fabulous in either a stylish black dress from an international designer, or an ensemble anyone can find at their local Gap store. Mrs. Obama has sported fashionable kicks, such as suede and metallic pink Lanvin sneakers, and classic pumps.
Sometimes, our First Lady stays with the neutral white or black colors (either of which she can pull off masterfully), but often she adds the flair of color to her outfits. Michelle Obama is not afraid to add vibrant color and will opt for purple, yellow, and red colors. All of those colors make a splash in her outfit and portray a sense of both confidence and optimism.
A fashion icon cannot wear such a crown without having an amazing hairstyle to place said crown upon. Mrs. Obama owns this category, as well. She has gone with a short bob, which is very chic, and had always styled her hair beautifully when long and sleek.
Jackie Kennedy was the initial fashion icon in the white house. Michelle Obama is following suit, and doing it with style!
