Michelle Obama, Bill Clinton, Janet Huckabee and Ann Romney: A Review of Potential First Ladies

Big Ben K.
First Ladies have had a special place in the hearts and minds of American's since Martha Washington and Abigail Adams. From the outspokenness of Eleanor Roosevelt to the iconic fashion statements of Jacqueline Kennedy's all the way to Hillary Clinton's push for a public role in making policy decisions. The role of First Lady is special because they are not elected but can have a significant influence and insight with their President husbands. Even though a day can mean a year in political fortunes and today's front runner could be tomorrow's has been, here is a sampling of some of the possible first ladies:

Mrs. Michelle Obama

Mrs. Obama was born 1964 on Chicago's South Side.. After high school she went on to Princeton University graduating with a B.A. in sociology and a minor in African American studies. Mrs. Obama continued her education and earned a degree at Harvard Law School in 1988. Mrs. Obama met her future husband, Barack, while working for the Chicago law firm, Sidley and Austin.

Mrs. Obama began working with University of Chicago in 1996 as an associate dean of student services, and then as executive director of community and external affairs until 2005, when she was appointed vice president of community and external affairs at the University of Chicago Medical.

While candidate Barack is busy campaigning, Michelle does her part by working and taking care of their two daughters Malia, 9, and Sasha, 6.

Former President Bill Clinton

I think most of my readers would remember Bill. Back in the peaceful, ignorance is bliss 90's, he was the 42nd President of the United States. Since leaving office in 2001, President Clinton has enjoyed much success in Fund-raising on the world stage for hunger, AIDS research, and Tsunami Relief. If Senator Clinton is elected as the first female President, former President Clinton would be take on a historic role as the First Spouse. While the first lady normally occupies the East Wing of the White House and is responsible for the social calendar, former President Clinton would obviously act as a very close adviser to Mrs. Clinton insomuch that he has already had the job for eight years.

Mrs. Janet Huckabee

The former Janet McCain was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana and moved to Hope, Arkansas at the age of one. She graduated from Hope High School, and, at the age of 18, she married Mike Huckabee. They have been married for 33 years and have three children.

Mrs. Huckabee has completed two marathons. While this feat is a testament in itself, it is more impressive in that she was diagnosed with spinal cancer at the age of 19.

As First Lady of Arkansas Mrs. Huckabee devoted a majority of her time to overseeing a $4 million renovation of the Governor's mansion as well as focusing on programs helping and advancing the health and well being of woman and children in her state. Currently, aside from campaigning with her husband, Mrs. Huckabee currently works for the American Red Cross in Arkansas.

Mrs. Ann Romney

Mrs. Romney attended high school in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan at the Kingswood School, which is associated with the high school Candidate Mitt Romney attended. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University. The Romney's have been married for 38 years and have five sons that have taken a very important role in their father's campaign..

Having been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1998, Mrs. Romney has volunteered her time to raising awareness of the disease as a Board Member of the New England Chapter of the MS Society.

Aside from serving on the board of the New England Chapter of the MS Society as well as the Women's Cancer Advisory Board in Massachusetts, Mrs. Romney has been an active volunteer with many groups serving the needs of young inner-city girls.

She is also an experienced equestrian, having received numerous awards and recognition.

In the spirit of full disclosure I am a conservative at heart meaning I'll most likely be voting for a Republican. That said, if I had to pick one of the candidate's spouses to be the best possible First Lady, it would be Michelle Obama. Here is a strong woman who is still not afraid to be a woman. She's incredibly intelligent, has the ability to keep her counsel to Obama private, is not interested in running for office, has her own successful career, and to top it all off she raises her two children while Barrack is busy campaigning. Truthfully, she reminds me of my own wife. While I think candidate Obama's policies are a bit too 1960's rehash, Mrs. Obama is a modern woman who would be a perfect fit for the "office" of First Lady.
