Michigan Football Returns with Notre Dame Win

Robert Dougherty
Michigan football has been on hard times for years. But after the Michigan Notre Dame score went final, Michigan football is back. At least, that's what most will say after Michigan football got its biggest win in years against Notre Dame. In truth, Michigan football is not all the way back yet, even with their thrilling win against Notre Dame. But the Michigan-Notre Dame 38-34 final score gave Michigan football its most positive headlines in at least two years, nonetheless. Now the question is whether the Wolverines can keep that momentum for a whole year.

Michigan football hit rock bottom last year, after a 3-9 record. Accusations about Rich Rodriguez's practice schedule didn't get this season off to a good start either. But the Michigan Notre Dame score has put those negative headlines on the back burner, for at least a little while.

Michigan football played its best game in a long time, in holding off the Irish and then coming back against them in a thrilling rally. The 38-34 score put the Wolverines at 2-0, and ensured a trip back into the top 25.

The Wolverines jumped out early against the Irish, and held Notre Dame down despite the Irish gaining a lot of early yards. Michigan held an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Jimmy Clausen led the Irish back to take the lead. However, the Wolverines came right back thanks to quarterback Tate Forcier, now the newest darling of Ann Arbor.

Forcier got the Wolverines into field goal range, but he didn't settle for tying the score. A touchdown pass to Greg Mathews with 11 seconds left sealed the huge victory. As such, Wolverines fans are ready to yell that Michigan football is back.

The Wolverines may not have a big stage to prove it for a while. Michigan football will next play cupcake Eastern Michigan - although cupcakes have been a big challenge for the Wolverines lately. They then open the Big 10 schedule, although their matchup with Michigan State on October 3 has lost some luster, due to the Spartans' upset loss to Central Michigan today.

The Wolverines hope to be 5-0 going into their visit to Iowa on October 10 - and 7-0 going into an even larger showdown with Penn State, who they usually beat at home, two weeks later. The media and fans are eager to proclaim Michigan football as a national power again, but only time will tell.

What would really help the Wolverines is if the Big 10 gets respected again - so that Michigan would then be taken more seriously if they win it. The Wolverines gained back their respect today - though the Big 10 won't regain theirs unless arch-rival Ohio State beats USC tonight.

Big Ten officials are corrupt. Just watched IU beat Michigan at the little house and game was literally stolen from them. Tie goes to the receiver, I think ref's need to be investigated. Michigan is terrible and looked pathetic.

For Years? You're right. Beating a Tim Tebow Heisman Florida team the same year as the App State game loss, while still being bowl eligible AND the year before a 3-9 year (the worst record for the team in 130 years) was a struggling year(???). So is UM's record against the SEC over the many struggling years. I'm guessing you also don't understand why UM typically doesn't bring their "A game" to bowl games either. I can tell you, the conference championship is bigger at UM and most of the Big Ten, than the "National Championship" (and even though it's played in one game, it's still "mythical" and more for fans or writer "wish they weres". Over the last three years Top 25...3-9 year with new coach and system... Top 25... That is just an awful record of struggling. You're killing me.

The team looks faster this year. The D needs a little work but overall the team looks good. WOW... what a freshman class. Coach Rodrigez is a good fit remember where Bo was from. We need to beat OSU... GO BLUE!!!!

The guest has it right with their correction, Michigan has not "been on hard times for years".

It says a lot about your credibility when your first sentence is complete BS.

Seriously Mr. Dougherty, you couldn't find a better opener than an outright lie?

Yes, last year was awful. However, Michigan program has not been on Hard Time for years. Get it straight.
Recall 2008 Capital One Bowl: Michigan 41, Florida 35.
    Records
    2006: 11-2
    2007: 9-4,
    2008: yeah, it really stunk.

That%27s the kind of win that has eluded Michigan since I started watching in the late sixties. I thought Coach Rodrigez was an excellent choice last year and just for this reason%3A he knows how to win in the big games. Keep going Blue%21
