The Michigan Iceman Cometh Challenge is the largest one day mountain bike race in the United States. The Iceman Cometh Challenge is held on the first Saturday in November; unless the 1st falls on the Saturday then it is held on the next Saturday. The race is a 27 mile, cross country, point to point race from Kalkaska, Michigan to Traverse City, Michigan. The 20th annual Iceman race will be held on Saturday November 6, 2010.

The Iceman Cometh Challenge presented by Gary Fisher, is a road race on dirt. The course travels through the Pere Marquette State Forest in Northwestern Lower Michigan. The course is mainly two tracks, dirt roads, abandoned railroad beds and the famous Vasa Nordic ski trail. The race starts in downtown Kalkaska and ends at Timber Ridge RV & Recreation Resort. Imagine 2000 mountain bike racers converging onto the rugged trails of Northern Michigan in the snow.

This year, 2009, the Iceman Cometh Challenge came without snow. In fact it was a perfect day for November in Northern Michigan. The temperatures rose into the 50s. This was unusually mild and caught most of the riders off guard. Since most of the people come from all over the United States and Canada, they brought all cold weather gear. My daughter and son-in-law were scrambling to find something cooler to wear as were most of the riders. The challenge this year was to not over heat.

Registration for the Iceman Cometh mountain bike race is held in February. Details of the registration opening can be found at www.iceman.com. The 2009 race originally started out to be a first come first serve bases. Due to the extreme popularity of this race and unforeseen circumstance, the site shut down and registration had to be re-opened under a different format. Things were finally straightened out to everyone's satisfaction and the final registration went off without any further problems. It has not been released as to how the registration for the 2010 race will be handled. Registration will be available online.

The Iceman Cometh Challenge mountain bike race is a great finale to end the racing year with. It is a fun race with lots of fun activities going on starting on Friday night. The $31000 in cash prizes makes this an even more fun mountain bike racing event and well worth traveling to Michigan.
