Michigan's Budget Battle Hits Education
In latest reports many school districts are already facing money shortages due to the decline in student enrollment. So many families have been driven out of state in search of jobs. When jobs go, students follow. State aid is based largely on enrollment with each student worth at about $7500.
Now the state is threatening a shutdown. This means that the state run lottery will be shutdown as well. The lottery supplies the school system with $2 million a day for K-12. Add this to the loss already in state aid per student and Michigan's educational institutions will be in grave danger.
Is this the price Michigan pays when government gets too big?
Michigan is pushing for its young people to have at minimum a 2 year degree after high school so its young adults can get a job here. How are they to achieve such a status when there basic K-12 education is in jeopardy?
The strength in Michigan's future recovery is dependent on its young people staying here. This will never happen if things continue to run at status quo.
In the event of Michigan's budget not being settled and the state implements a partial shutdown, school districts will have no choice but to shut down. They can not run operations without the state funding. Many smaller rural schools are already close to financial ruin. This definitely could push them over the edge.
It is almost the eleventh hour and no sign of a balanced budget yet.

Post a CommentThere are several reasons for the budget problems in Lansing. Among them are a downturn in the automotive industry which supports 8 to 9 other jobs outside the factory, the way schools are funded under Proposal A, legislators acting on the principles that got them elected in not voting for a bad solution just to have a solution, and a shift from local control of schools to State and Federal control of schools.
Illegal immigration is not a prime factor in the State budget crisis.
Michigans got problems with their budget due to illegal immigration. Oh well, Boo Hoo.
I believe the American citizenry has lost it. Why? Well, everyone has heard of how California has been bankrupted by illegal immigration and only billions issued in bonds, constantly, keep the State afloat. Billions that should have been used for infrastructure that is now crumbling, was instead used for social services for the bottomless pit that is the needs of illegal aliens.
What's all this got to do with Michigan? Well, you would think that the politicians who are in charge of Michigan would be aware of what happened to California. I worked with a guy a bit younger than me, about 17 years ago who was from Michigan. I asked him what brought him out to California? He told me that the economy was shot in Michigan and that was the reason. So I suppose the economy is now booming in Michigan, so much so, that it can now provide for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants AND Michigans citizens? P.S. Don't bother coming to California to now look for a job if your from Michigan,
