So, what makes Mackinac Island different from other Midwest excursions? First, its uncomplicated atmosphere. On Mackinac Island, there are no cars allowed. With its small population of only 500 permanent residents, getting around Mackinac Island is limited to horse, buggy, bicycle or by foot. The people of Mackinac Island take care to preserve the beautiful Victorian-era image of the island. Aside from transportation on the island, the Victorian-style summer cottages of Mackinac Island are preserved in their original glory. It truly is a unique escape for families and couples alike.
Mackinac Island is also famous for its wide selection of gourmet food - particularly its deliciously sinful desserts. Mackinac Island fudge has gained a reputation in the surrounding states, as several island fudge shops can attest to. For instance, May's Fudge has been a well-known fixture on Mackinac Island since the 1930s, with five generations of candymakers. There's a lot to choose from, too: this year, May's Fudge is offering fourteen different flavors. Fudge Lovers can choose from chocolate, peanut butter, maple nut, cherry, blueberry, rocky road, butter pecan, vanilla nut and more!
If you don't want to simply walk about the island, there are several rental opportunities available for transportation. Some of the options available for traversing the island include bikes, strollers, electric wheelchairs, tag-along bike attachments and bicycles built for two. There are trail maps and even guided bike tours available to help get you started.
Mackinac Island is a wonderful getaway, whether it be for a whole week or only a weekend. It offers a little bit of everything for every taste, with leisurely exploration, delicious desserts and an easygoing atmosphere. Whether it's peak summer season or colorful fall, consider planning a trip to Mackinac Island in your future.
