Michigan's Top High School Football Player Announces His School Choice

The Wait is Over

Muskegon, Michigan has been placed on the "football map" because of Muskegon High School's wide receiver/defensive back Ronald Johnson. Ronald Johnson (affectionately known as "RoJo") helped to lead his team to victory in the state championships held at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. Johnson is ranked #8 in the nation among high school football players, and was recently named to the Parade All-America High School Football Team. He is also the most sought after high school football player in all of Muskegon's history.

Over the last several weeks, Johnson received visits from several schools including USC's coach Pete Carroll and Ohio State's coach Jim Tressel. They came with the intention of getting Johnson to commit to play for their teams. In the end Johnson announced that he'd narrowed his decision down to five - University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Ohio State University, University of Southern California and University of Florida.

Just a couple of hours ago, Johnson made the announcement we've all been waiting for - that is what college team he will play for. He chose to make the annoucement at his church, Grace Apostolic Church in Muskegon Heights, Michigan, in front of his family, friends, classmates, teachers, church members and coaches. Prior to his announcement, his grandmother, father, mentor (Judge Gregory Pittman) and Chronicle Sports Reporter Tom Kendra came to the podium to make remarks and encourage Ronald in whatever decision he made.

Johnson began his presentation by thanking everyone for their prayers and support throughout his high school career. He stated that his decision had not been an easy one, and that he would have been honored to play for any of the teams who were recruiting him. Nevertheless, he stated that he had come to a decision. Johnson asked that everyone respect his decision although they might not agree with it. Perhaps his decision was influenced by the foot of snow outside of the front door, or the 0 degree reading on the thermostat and of course the blustering wind chills of 21 below. But Johnson, with the assistance of his brother CoJo (also a star player for Muskegon High School) put on a Trojan jersey indicating that he will be playing for the University of Southern California this upcoming fall.

USC, you got a good one! I guess next year I'll be cheering - GO TROJANS, in support of our own Ronald Johnson.
