Mickey, a Shelter Rescue

John Mario
Some folks spend hours and hours

searching breed and pedigree

A particular shape, color and type of dog

to fill their special need

A somewhat different quest for me

through rows of shelter crates

where pleading eyes and wagging tails

call out, "Will you be my fate?"

Color, type or size here not my first concern

Which of these little ones needs me most

was mine here to discern

Some people may spend loads of cash

on designer pups mainly to be shown

For me a dog, less to impress than

to hold as my very own

I may not have the money for diamond studded

collar, nor leash bedecked in jewels

Still Mickey walks proudly by my side

sans gems or shiny pearls

Not saying that these fancy pups

are not loved as much as mine

Only saying my sweet Mickey boy is loved as much

and for both of us that's fine

All that show ring fuss may be just grand

for your "Buffy of Burgoyne" or your "Rex, the King of Peet"

As for my sweet Mickey boy,

he snores blissfully, sleeping at my feet!

I get all my animals from the shelter but it is so hard I want to take every one of them home
