If you are looking for a great late night St. Paul Minnesota restaurant, Mickey's Diner has got to be on your must go there list. Mickey's Diner, better known as Mickey's Dining Car, is yellow and red rail car that was built in 1937 by Jerry O'Mahony. It was actually built in New Jersey and shipped by train to St. Paul. It was placed on its current site just before World War II. It is still located at 36 West 7th street. There is free parking, but it is not a huge parking lot so I would plan on stopping by in the off hours.

Mickey's Diner is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Those that work there swear it has not been closed one day since it opened. Loving worn in, it is a very comfortable place to sit and eat, or as many do, sober up after the bars close. The décor is more 50ish, with booths and stools, made of chrome and dark wood. Each booth has a jukebox with great 50's music. The nostalgic feel of Mickey's diner is good enough to get it a place in several movies; The Mighty Ducks, A Prairie Home Companion and Jingle All The Way. And has graced the front of many postcards. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places

The menu at this St. Paul Minnesota restaurant is milk shakes, fries, hamburgers and breakfast, every day, all day long. If you go in for breakfast you will not be disappointed; at least not if you are looking for greasy spoon far. The Omelets are to die for, whipped up and cooked in tons of butter for a flavor that knocks your socks off. They serve great hash brown potatoes served the usual way or O'Brien with green peppers, ham and onion.

For a retreat into nostalgia, order a bowl of Mulligan Stew, a house specialty of this St. Paul Minnesota restaurant that will please most every one. The milkshakes at Mickey's Diner are fabulous, creamy and wonderful!

This St. Paul Minnesota restaurant is fine for kids; however, the waitresses don't seem too patient with children. I know, the rough waitress is part of the "feel", but I didn't feel comfortable. They are very efficient and the food is great, so this is not a deterrent for me and I will eat there again...and again! There is a limit to how many people can sit in a booth however, there must be at least two people in your party to sit in a booth and you must spend at least $3 each to tie up the space. The food is very reasonably priced, cheap actually. But everything is very good!
