Dedicated His Life to His Students and Players

Honoring the Legend

I would like to pay tribute to the late and great Mickey Gorham, the legendary head football coach at Meyers High School in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Micky is an inspiration to me as he lived a life of service and dedication to his students and football players. I strive to emulate his life of service and dedication to others.

Mickey grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and was an All-Star athlete from G.A.R. High School in Wilkes-Barre. He was probably one of the best high school football players in the history of Pennsylvania. He had a great career as a high school football player and as an All-Star athlete, and earned a scholarship to Notre Dame University.

College Football

Gorham was a highly regarded lineman at Notre Dame, and some taught of him as one of the best linemen of his day, one of the best linemen of his generation. He was well on his way to a great career in the the NFL. Once in the NFL he would have the opportunity to live the good life and obtain what everyone craves; wealth, success, and fame. Unfortunately, a devastating knee injury ended his football career.

Coming Home

He returned home to Northeastern Pennsylvania and dedicated himself to the young people. I was in grade school when he was just getting started. He helped teach health and gym class. He was very interested and concerned about us as young people. He taught us how to live healthy, to play hard, to respect each other, and to get along.

From there he went to Meyers High School and went on to become one of the most successful and respected high school football coaches of his time. For 35 years, Gorham served as an educator, principal, football coach and athletic director at Meyers High School. As a football coach he won many big games and several championships.

A Life Worth Living

He lost his chance to live the good life of wealth, fame, and success. He dedicated his life to the next generations so they could have their day in the sun. The Luzerne Foundation set up a charitable fund in his honor. The Fund recognizes his ability to challenge students to achieve great things and give their all to whatever they do.
