If you work environment relates to the above description your boss might be a micromanager, or if you are boss who keeps controls on palm of your hand you might be micromanaging your colleagues. Being obsessed with detail to extreme instead of big picture turns a manager to be a control freak who takes a way employees freedom and instead of empowering them to make decisions he creates a monotony of hierarchal structure where orders drains from the top.
Overzealous micromanagers hurt the most valuable organization resources, they push a way the smart experienced employees who are driven by the passion of taking every challenging task which comes their way and who put tone of hours to deliver solution within time frame. These are employees who rather than being micromanaged prefer consultation environment which opens up discussion table, offer suggestions and ideas and instead of having manager peeping now and then over their shoulders, they prefer updating them on their progress. These are type of employees, whose nerves cannot tolerate the control freak micromanagers.
To avoid being driven crazy to the extent of quitting, realizing micromanagers are driven by perfectionist and suffer from weakness of not trusting the employees, which hinders their confidence to delegate the duties helps in separating the micromanagement behavior from their positive personalities. By picking the positive behavior you will be in a position to face the boss and help in reorganizing management behavior to save quality performance.
These are some of the ways to frame new management style to help the manager loosen up his/her micromanagement style
1.You can volunteer to take projects which you are sure you can tackle with excellence, walk to your boss and request him/her to delegate those projects to you.
2.Help your boss delegate effectively by requesting every project details upfront and lay down on project review interim
3.Be upfront with your ideas and suggestions and give your boss full analysis on why the project implementation might require different approach
4.Acknowledge your boss decision will carry the day
5.Keep your boss updated with your project progress on every step of the project
It might not be a smooth transition to loosen up micromanagement style, but one thing to realize you should be accommodating when mistakes happen. Harshly critiquing boss on project out come because you did not have a full control will not help; instead you should work ways of leveling communication on your next project. Micromanagement takes out drive and motivation to innovative; this hurts the organization by pushing out some of the best employees. To lessen up the damages, open communication will eliminates the trap of micromanagement which kills innovation.
