Microsoft Excel - Freezing Panes (Audience Level: Beginner)
Horizontal and Vertical Pane Freeze for Headers, Scrolling Etc
Freezing Panes
1). As always first off we are going to need some kind of data. For this example I don't care what data we are using.
So please generate some random data and paste it into excel. Have enough data to span longer than one page.
Something like this: ExampleRandomData
As you can see from my example I have a header row with bold and centered titles , and then some random numbers. The data spans to another page that is not visible until you scroll. So how do we make excel scroll without title row disappearing. That is where freezing panes functionality becomes useful.
2) To freeze the header column all you need to do is
2.1 .go to the view Tab!
2.2 click on Freeze Panes and then freeze top row from the drop down menu (screeenshot)
2.3 Try scrolling!
3)But this will only work if your header is in the top row, what if you need to freeze a row in the middle or if you have several tables with header? Not to worry! It is just as easy!
All you need to do in that case is:
3.1 go to the view Tab!
3.2.Higlight the row underneath the row you want to be frozen.
3.3 click on Freeze Panes and then Freeze Panes from the drop down menu (screenshot2)
3.4 Try scrolling
(an important thing to note is that this can be applied to both vertical or horizontal.selection. All you have to do is instead of selecting a row select a column. The rest of the steps are the same.
Hope this tutorial was useful. See you in the next one where I will be talking about filter and applying them.
I might change these tutorials over to video format so that people would actually see stuff in action!
