Microsoft Zune Offers New Features for Music Fans

Microsoft decided to enter the personal media player market in a big way. Microsoft released their new Zune media player in mid-November and pulled out all the stops to make certain everyone noticed the Zune. Microsoft positioned the Zune to compete head to head with the iPod from Apple. With a $249.99 MSRP and distribution in nearly 30,000 stores the 30 GB internal memory Zune should make a big splash this holiday season. Microsoft also hosted free concerts across the country to help kick off release of the Zune.

Aside from storing 7,500 songs (or a selection of songs, pictures and video), the Zune also introduces direct wireless file sharing. Zune-to-Zune wireless transfers allow Zune users to share files directly with their fellow Zune users. Microsoft says they are exploring new models of music distribution that will benefit both consumers and artists. Microsoft did integrate digital rights management into the Zune however. Zune-to-Zune file sharing allows a Zune user to wirelessly receive files from another Zune user for limited use. The received song may be played a maximum of three times in three days. Zune users are able to bookmark songs they listened to on a trial basis to download next time they connect their Zune to their computer. Zune privacy settings allow users to turn wireless off altogether or set their status as invisible so other Zune users do not see their Zune.

Microsoft designed the Zune to be part of a system that includes the Zune player, the Zune Marketplace music service and an online community of music fans. The Zune Marketplace allows Zune users to browse, preview and purchase music online. Zune users may also use Microsoft Points to make purchases through Zune Marketplace. The Zune Pass will be of interest to all serious music fans. For just $14.99 per month Zune users can browse and download all the songs they want from they Zune Marketplace.

Microsoft offers the ability to update your Zune through your PC as updates are available. This feature allows your Zune to always be up to date with the latest software.

There are a variety of accessories available to personalize your Zune experience. Home A/V Packs provide everything you need to listen to your Zune at home or in the office. Car Packs include a car charger to power your Zune on the go and an FM transmitter to play your Zune through your existing car audio system wirelessly. There are a variety of cases and jackets you can buy to house your Zune. Docks are available to connect your Zune simply when you are home. Wireless remote control allows users to operate their Zune while it is docked. External speakers are available for those times when you just don't want the headset.
