Mid Season Top 10 Fantasy Football Busts of 2008

David Vaught
Anyone who has been playing fantasy football for any amount of time knows one thing, it can be disappointing as often as it can be fun. Everyone remembers draft day, and how you were so excited to pick up an elite RB in round 2. Or how you were certain a rookie would explode and take the NFL by storm. This article is a look at the worst fantasy busts so far, and why they are doing so badly.

Joseph Addai- Someone that many people thought had the potential of being one of the top 5 RBs in the league. He Had very good 1st and 2nd years in the league, and many thought there was only upside. A slow start for the colts offensively hurt his production in the first few games, and now an injury is going to make him miss time. Addai has 4 TDs through week 8, but only a little over 200 yards rushing. Those aren't stats of a #1 RB.

Tom Brady- Ok, so this might be a very obvious pick. Many people drafted him in the first round ahead of some elite running backs like Clinton Portis or even Marion Barber. That choice didn't work out so well. Any time your first round pick is out for the season it is a tragedy, but for it to be after the first game it is even worse.

Derek Anderson- Many drafted him as their number 1 QB this year, and for good reason. He had exceptional numbers and great chemistry with Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow. This year, not so much. After a horrible start to the season offensively, Browns fans have wanted to put Brady Quinn in as QB. With the exception of their freak game against the Giants, the Browns have done absolutely nothing on offense.

Braylon Edwards- For a guy that predicted 17 TDs this year, he hasn't exactly given fantasy owners any reason to start him. One game with more than 100 yards and only 2 TDs so far, for a guy that was drafted as a #1 WR these numbers hurt.

Chad Johnson- Finishing the year last year as a top 8 WR, many expected more of the same from 'Ocho Cinco'. So far, they are disappointed. Usually Chad can back up his mouth with his play, but he hasn't really gotten the chance to do that this year. The Bengals are horrid offensively, and with Carson Palmer out likely for the season, it won't get much better.

Larry Johnson- Expected to put up gaudy numbers yet again, the Chiefs' running attack has not found a rhythm this year. The only notable game for Larry was against the Broncos, and that was more defensively bad football than it was the Chiefs playing well. Now with attitude problems surfacing, and a 1 game suspension recently taking place, Larry might see the bench a little more than owners would like.

Ryan Grant- Coming out of nowhere last season, Ryan Grant was the target of many owners this year in the late first and early second rounds. So far he has not seemed like the same guy from last year. Something just doesn't seem right with Grant. His explosiveness seems gone, and his vision almost seems worse than last year. He has had a troubling hamstring as of late, but it seems like something more than just a small injury is keeping him from reaching last year's form.

Santonio Holmes- Even though he was drafted most likely as a #2 or 3 WR in many leagues, owners are still disappointed at his season thus far. All those long TD passes he hauled in last year have been strangely absent this year. Also, having just been suspended one game (and maybe more) for Marijuana, the season isn't looking too bright for him.

Peyton Manning - People who drafted Peyton as their QB were looking for consistently high performance, which so far, is not what they have gotten. The Colts just don't look right on offense (with the exception of the Baltimore game). Maybe it was Peyton's knee surgury which kept him from syncing up with Marvin and Reggie, or maybe people have just found a way to rattle him. So far, his numbers are not what we expected from Peyton Manning.

Vernon Davis- Many people who drafted him were caught up on what he did in college, and not what he has proven in the NFL (which is nothing). Physical abilities galore, Davis just hasn't shown any consistency or route running prowess to prove he is going to be an elite TE in this league. Being on the 49ers doesn't help much either.

Granted, this year is a season of anomaly.
