Middle School Writing: Explaining a Process

Natasha Stiller
Objective: Explaining a Process

Writing prompt 5 min.
What do you like to do in your free time?

Explaining a process.

Activity: Use peanut butter and jelly "performance" to show that it is essential to describe all important details in a job related task. Otherwise, the information cannot be conveyed properly.

Now, to complete this activity, you will need a volunteer. This person will go outside as you describe to the remaining class what will happen. When the student comes back into the room, they are to be blindfolded or pointed in the opposite direction of their instructor. The instructor will assume the role of a child that has never made for themselves a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The job of the volunteer is to explain, without showing, only verbally explaining how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

This is intended to be a funny message between describing exactly what must be told, even if you assume someone might already know how to complete a particular task, example, untying the bread twistee to get the bread out of the wrapper..... The volunteer might already assume that you have two slices of bread ready to be slathered in peanut butter and jelly.

Perform the need to communicate to the class. This is meant to be silly. The class will laugh and as the instructor you can play out the role of a child that needs coaching.

The student's assignment will be to write a paper on the process of completing something. The task can be of your choice.
