Midland Board Member Clint McCance is Face of Hate

"The Only Way Im Wearin it for Them is If They All Commit Suicide."

Debbie Henthorn
Clint McCance, a member of the school board for Midland School District in Pleasant Plains, Arkansas is under fire for a hate-filled Facebook tirade about last week's Spirit Day.

The purpose of the Facebook Spirit Day Campaign was to honor the recent suicides of LGBT youth who were bullied because they were gay or perceived to be gay, but also to remind other LGBT teens that there is support. McCance allegedly took to his own Facebook page, which was captured in a screenshot, to declare his personal feelings about Spirit Day.

The language is harsh and is a direct quote, typos and all.

"Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers committed suicide. The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide. I cant believe the people of this world have gotten this stupid. We are honoring the fact that they sinned and killed therselves because of their sin. REALLY PEOPLE."

Clint McCance is a school board member. McCance is responsible for the welfare of children. And Clint McCance is a bully. Clint McCance is a school board member who alleged expressed his distaste for gays on a day many others chose to express support for LGBT youth.

On October 26, the Human Rights Campaign declared McCance the "Face of Hate" and the "Voice of Bigotry". Word has rapidly spread through the Internet. A Facebook page titled "Fire Clint McCance" was created the same day and has already attracted more than 18,000 Facebook members calling for McCance's dismissal from the Midland School Board.

If it weren't enough that Clint McCance suggested that all gays commit suicide, he later responded to postings in the thread stating "being a fag doesn't give you the right to ruin the rest of our lives" and "I would disown my kids if they were gay".

Several members of the Facebook page "Fire Clint McCance" have posted the contact information for the Midland School District as well as McCance's personal contact information. The contact information for his business, Clint's Carpet Cleaning, has also been posted.

Change.org has created an online petition demanding the resignation of Clint McCance and has already collected over 5,500 signatures of their goal of 7,500. Demanding the resignation is the only recourse as school board members are elected officials not subject to termination.

In my home state of Ohio, educators are held to a higher standard than the general public. As recently as September 2010, a Centerburg, Ohio middle-school teacher tendered his resignation following inappropriate Facebook conduct while the school was on summer recess. While Clint McCance is not an educator, he is responsible for the students in the Midland School District.

Clint McCance can hate anyone and any lifestyle he chooses - that's his right. When he is responsible for the well-being of students, he needs to express those thoughts only in private.

I can't but wonder how much the freedom of speech is responsible for the "depressed and sad society".
In the land of the free people obviously aren't born with equal rights, and the number one name in the land of the brave is, Anonymous. To the religious anti-gay people out there, do the words; Wrath, Pride, and even Envy have any meaning to you?

He most certainly has the right to believe what he wishes and speak his mind, but he also should understand that the ramifications of his actions are his responsibility. Those who respond to his words in the same manner are putting themselves in the same class. I do not agree with his opinion but will stop short of thinking he can not express his opinion as long as he is willing to accept the results. Facebook is described as a "Social Media" site. Those two words in themselves say there is nothing private about Facebook.

My post was cut off near the end. I said I certainly do not believe they (gays) should heve the right to adopt any child.

This is America and Freedom of Speech is our right. He posted this on his private FB page, it's his opinion, and he has a right to it. He may have been a little crass about it but it is still his right voice his opinion. I will not be acknowledging any "Spirit Day" either and that is my right. My youngest brother was gay and he died from complications due to AIDS. If he was not gay, I believe he would be alive today. I loved my brother, we were all supportive of him (all 6 of his siblings and his Italian father and Irish mother) He was ours and we loved him but we knew from the time he was three years old that he was what he was, and for that reason I believe people are born gay, they do not choose it. At 3 years old, no ones knows their sexuality. I am a Catholic and homosexuality is a sin and so is suicide. I don't believe gays should be married, I don't believe they should be teaching our children in schools, and I certainly do not believe they should have the right to ad
