Midnight Mass

Pat Lunsford
A new day dawns as I rouse from my dreams.

Something is amiss or so it seems.

Why has my countenance fallen like this?

Perhaps the midnight mass I missed?

Surely His Majesty doesn't care

For I know I can worship Him anywhere.

There is a heavy burden upon my heart

So without delay I must depart.

To His true and holy word I will go.

I will fast and pray and then I will know.

Tell me O Lord is it wrong to pass

The assembly of Your midnight mass?

The Sun is high as I search and look

Through the pages of Your Holy book.

Help me O Lord for I cannot find

The answer for my troubled mind.

Is midnight mass a thing You desire

For me to attend before I retire?

Shadows lengthen as dusk draws near.

From whence is the calling I perceive in my ear?

Could it be the high and lofty One

Reminding me of things undone?

Here am I is my response to the King

As His voice so softly in my ear doth ring.

Midnight mass He said to my mind

Is important only to a certain kind.

Those who are troubled and cannot sleep

Come to midnight mass to weep.

But I am everywhere as you have said

And of course I can hear you upon your bed.

The sorrow you felt was only a test.

You sought Me with zeal now I give you rest.
