Midwestern Fall Activities Abound

Plenty to Do in the Fall

Don A Shepard
Fall in the Midwestern U.S. flourishes with fun filled activities for families. The leaves are a beautifully orchestrated collage of colors as the trees prepare for winter. The heat of summer has passed and cool relatively dry days begin. Time to turn off the air conditioners and fans, break out the sweatshirts and have fun!

Hiking and camping are ideal activities for the Midwestern fall. The hills of Brown County State Park in Southern Indiana are a treat for anyone in the fall. Artists from around the world flock there to paint the breathtaking landscapes. The town of Nashville in Brown County is scenic in its' own right and you can stroll the streets containing a plethora of local shops, restaurants, and activities for your family. There are other beautiful parks to explore as well, just be aware spiders are plentiful here in the fall.

Fall is the time when many crops are harvested including pumpkins. There are many pumpkin patches your family can visit in the fall for a unique experience. These patches will allow you to pick your own pumpkin straight from the patch. Most will offer a ride around the farm in a wagon, commonly known as a "hay ride". Harvest time also brings festival s where you can sample the year's crops, enjoy music, and other activities. Parke County Indiana is known as the covered bridge capital of the world. The covered bridge festival in October there is both fun and picturesque.

Corn is a huge crop in the Midwest. Some farmers will create mazes out of a portion of a field in the fall. The towering brown stalks are perfect for this purpose. It can be quite fun winding around in a corn field searching for an exit while getting an eerie "Children of the Corn" type feeling. Kids do enjoy them; just make sure you keep small ones where you can see them.

Halloween is a fall holiday that provides opportunities for indoor family activities as well as traditional trick or treating. Pumpkin carving can be very rewarding. There are kits that make it easy for a child to produce a sculpture that impresses even the seasoned carver. Then there are all of the home made costume possibilities that can be fun for the whole family to get involved in.

Fall in the Midwest offers a perfect climate along with a variety of unique outdoor and indoor family activities. So get up and enjoy them. Fun is to be had by all in the fall!

I've done fall in the Midwest, and you're absolutely right. Winters in Minnesota are a killer, though. Great article, Don.

Fall is my favorite season. I'm most likely not going to make it out to the midwest, but some people consider Erie PA to be the beginning f the midwest, and I'll be there in September!
