Miley Cyrus - Can't Be Tamed (Album Review)

Miley Cyrus is arguably popular culture's most processed offering. Unlike Britney, Christina, and Justin, Cyrus the person feels nearly non-existent. At least we don't know her. She nothing more or less than Disney. Even her "edgy" evolution is timed to such a specific degree that it feels insincere.

However, the evolution may not be going according to schedule. Early chart success for the lead single "Can't Be Tamed" have been disappointing in comparison to Cyrus mega-hit "Party in the U.S.A." While that endlessly entertaining and well-executed track felt comfortable for Cyrus, this latest evolution is seeming a bit forced.

Can't Be Tamed is an easily palatable pop offering with top-notch production and hooky tracks. There is only a single bad track to speak of ("My Heart Beats for Love"), although the lifeless "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" remake is a bit awkward and misguided. Hearing minors sing of "making love" usually is. And that's often the problem of Can't Be Tamed. Cyrus is joyless and infinitely too serious. She pines, whines, and suggestively sings in ways it seems she doesn't even understand. It's both relentlessly upbeat and mopey.

At times, it works extremely well. "Two More Lonely People" is a rapturous and anthemic electro-pop track that easily ranks as one of Cyrus' best. "Can't Be Tamed," in spite of its lyrical stupidity, is production gold. And hints of youth and exuberance exist on the accessibly and club-ready "Permanent December" and "Liberty Walk."

The latter section doesn't fare so well. On "Scars," Cyrus' talk of emotional damage would seem more appropriate on the heels of major divorce, not lost teenage love. "Robot" shows off her technical weakness as she growls and screeches her way through a clumsy delivery about breaking free. "My Heart Beats for Love" is painfully inane.

Can't Be Tamed is a mixed bag that starts strong and loses its way as it progresses. Hopefully Cyrus' next outing will be marked less by carefully executed marketing and more by actual music.
