Miley Cyrus and the Lap Dance Video: Has "Hannah Montana" Gone too Far?

Miley Cyrus who plays "Hannah Montana " on the Disney Channel is at the center of another controversy. The celebrity website TMZ.com released a video from an unknown source of a party. The couple in the video is said to be Miley Cyrus and Shankman. Miley is giving Shankman a lap dance in "Daisy Duke" style shorts. Shankman is the producer of Miley's latest movie, "The Last Song." She was sixteen at the time of the video and Shankman, 44.

Miley's parents did not attend the party. The dance got so racy parents left with their kids. The San Francisco Chronicle wondered what else happened at the party. Those who filmed the video. Shankman is a big Hollywood producer including the upcoming 82nd annual Academy Awards. Ironically, the name of Miley's new album is "Can't Be Tamed" and she seems to be living the title. It is the kind of behavior Disney would frown upon and a far cry from the innocent character she portrays. I'm sure they are not thrilled. The real ticker was when Billy Ray Cyrus actually defended the video saying, "It is what people her age do. They were just having fun." Both Miley and Shankman seemed to enjoy it.

One wonders what is wrong with having a little fun., I think in this case many parents don't want another role model following in the footsteps of Jamie Lynn and Britney Spears. Jamie and Britney were once Disney stars themselves. When 16 year-old Jamie Lynn Spears announced her pregnancy in 2008, she sent shock waves around the world. Her show was canceled and she faded into the background. I'm not comparing Miley to Jamie Lynn. I'm just talking about the way Miley's parents are just brushing it off like normal. Lindsay Lohan's parents said the same thing. Miley is slowly shedding her good girl image much to the chagrin of parents.

Is "Hannah Montana" still a role model? There are two sides to this issue. On one hand, kids need to understand Miley Cyrus isn't really like "Hannah Montana" in real life. They aren't perfect and no one expects them to be. Miley needs to understand she is celebrity and anything you do can leak into public. Now, Billy Ray may have been just trying to deter reporters. Regardless, Miley was a minor at the party. What decent parent would condone this behavior ? There are boundaries that need to be set here and parents need to set them. No one is saying Miley Cyrus has to be a role model. They do have an obligation to the many fans looking up to them. I don't know what direction Miley Cyrus is taking but growing up too fast may bring consequences. She may be a role model for the younger set but I am afraid she is losing favor with parents. If this is a "Hannah Montana" version of "Dirty Dancing", we are not amused.
