Miley Cyrus in the Last Song: One of the Top 5 Movies Filmed in Savannah

Savannah Georgia: Top Destination for Tourists and Hollywood Movie Directors

K. Bellamy
Savannah, Georgia is a perfect place for filming movies. Miley Cyrus stars in The Last Song, one of the latest movies to be filmed in this southern city of live oaks laced with Spanish moss. There are one or two other movies you may have heard of - and a couple you might have missed - that add up to a nice tour of Savannah, Georgia and the surrounding area. Have a weekend Savannah movie viewing party and then plan a trip to Savannah to see the locations.

The Last Song (2010)- starring Miley Cyrus

This movie also stars Greg Kinnear and Liam Hemsworth, but everyone will be watching, you know, Miley Cyrus. Filmed in Savannah, Wormsloe Plantation near Savannah, and on the beautiful beaches of Tybee Island, the previews for The Last Song which releases March 31st, show plenty of beach scenes. I can't wait to see all of the places I can recognize in and around Savannah.

Regardless of what the critics think, this movie is destined to be a hit. It is based on the Nicholas Sparks book by the same name (he also wrote the screenplay) and it includes, you know, Miley Cyrus. Heck, I've never seen a Hannah Montana movie and I'm going to go see The Last Song.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) - starring John Cusack, Kevin Spacey, Jude Law

Most native Savannahians will tell you that they are sick to death of what is referred to as "the book," so I suppose they are doubly sick of the movie, too. However, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil changed Savannah. Whether for the good or for the bad, you will have to decide for yourself. But a sleepy little southern city became a tourism force to be reckoned with because of Midnight.

The list of Savannah locations used in this movie could go on forever so here are the highlights: Mercer-Williams House; Monetary Square; Forsyth Park; Bonaventure Cemetery. The statue which plays such a part in the movie and was used as the front photo for the cover of the book had to be moved from the cemetery to the Telfair Museum of Art due to its popularity.

Something to Talk About (1995) - starring Julia Roberts, Dennis Quaid, Robert Duval, Kyra Sedgwick, Gena Rowlands

While the movie was not a favorite of the critics, Kyra Sedgwick was awarded a Golden Globe and an American Comedy Award nomination for supporting actress in this little film that shows some very nice shots of a popular pub in Savannah as well as one of the squares and a historic home or two.

The bar scene in Something to Talk About was filmed at the Sixpence Pub at 245 Bull Street where Julia Roberts as "Grace" confronts her cheating husband Dennis Quaid as "Eddie." The owners of the Six Pence Pub have left the exterior the same since the filming of the movie so that the many tourists who come to Savannah can enjoy it just as it was for the film.

Forrest Gump (1994) - starring Tom Hanks, Sally Field, Robin Wright Penn

Like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, you won't find many people who haven't seen this film. Like a love letter to the many locations in the South, Forrest Gump makes a special place in your heart for Savannah. The park bench scene is unforgettable. The park bench is now located in the Savannah History Museum.

Glory (1989) - starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington

This is a great civil war movie and Oscar winner for Best Sound, Best Cinematography, and Best Supporting Actor (Denzel Washington). Matthew Broderick plays Robert Gould Shaw who led the first U.S. Company of all black soldiers during the Civil War. The brutality of war and prejudice is seen from all sides, including the way black soldiers were treated to the burning of Darien, Georgia by northern officers.

Most interesting is that the infamous Jim Williams (of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil fame) allowed party scenes from Glory to be shot - no pun intended - in his home. Glory was released on December 15, 1989 and Jim Williams died in his home from a heart attack on January 14, 1990. Other scenes were shot at Savannah's Roundhouse Railroad Museum and at Jekyll Island in the Golden Isles of Georgia.

  • Many interesting movies have been filmed in Savannah, Georgia.
  • Clint Eastwood seems to be particularly fond of Savannah - he's been a part of several movies there.
  • The beaches of Tybee Island and nearby Jekyll and St. Simons Islands provide even more views.
The Mercer-Williams House has been featured in more drama than almost any house in Savannah. Remember Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil? How about the movie Glory? Did you know there was a connection between the two movies?
