Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth Romance in Last Song: A Review, No Spoilers

And a Cameo Appearance by an Endearing Troop of Critters

My soulmate and I would typically never have attended a Miley Cyrus flick- even if it were the only flick in town. Biased without knowing Miley because we were tired of all the fuss about her, we have completely turned around since seeing her on American Idol when she mentored the Top 11 singers. Miley came across as a passionate and compassionate fine young woman with great talent- we immediately understood why her young female fans adore her and want to be like her.

So, we went to see Miley's Last Song, which is essentially about a rebellious teenage girl struggling with her parents divorce. While the several peripheral characters are stereotypic, the starring ensemble cast of five give emotional depth to their characters. Greg Kinnear conveys yet another outstanding performance in his career, this time as Ronnie Miller's father. Ronnie is invoked by Miley. Kelly Preston plays her rarely-seen but effective mother. Bobby Coleman gives a laughter-and-tears characterization of Ronnie's little brother. And Aussie Liam Hemsworth- younger brother of Chris (filming Thor) and Luke- plays Ronnie's hunk boyfriend, Will Blakelee, for all he's worth, which is considerable.

There are no spoilers here about the plot. But there is a spoiler about who, or what, is in the character cast- baby sea turtles. What moviegoer- male or female- would not come close to tears watching a large troop of newly-hatched sea turtles awkwardly make their way from their sandy nest to the lapping waves of a Georgian ocean shore. The endearing baby reptiles symbolize an integral part of Miley's character, Ronnie, and of the humaneness that permeates the film.

When on American Idol in March 2010, Miley Cyrus performed one of the two songs from Last Song, which is based on a Nicholas Sparks book. Seated at a piano and wearing a silk white gown, the long-haired and long-legged teenager did a stunning performance of 'When I Look at You'. The other Miley Cyrus song from the film is 'I Hope You Find It'.

A priceless bonus for Miley and Liam while shooting a film depicting their romance is that their friendship developed into a real live romance. Of her first on-screen kiss with Liam Hemsworth, Miley said it 'triggered' something inside her. "Love makes you feel beautiful and it makes you feel good about yourself," said Miley. "It's having someone complete you and helping you learn more about yourself- someone who continues to inspire you and helps you be a better person. That's what Liam does to me." In all those on-screen kisses shared by Miley and Liam resides an immutable sense of the couple's passion.

Last Song is worth seeing. It has some memorable moments. You might even become a Miley Cyrus fan, if you aren't already one. And what teenage girl won't go ga-ga over Liam Hemsworth.
