Miley Cyrus: Right or Wrong?

Nancy Yu
Disney Channel star Miley Cyrus has always been known as a squeeky clean role model for young children. Whenever, you go to any department or clothing store, you see her big smile plastered on the walls or by the clothing racks. Kids look up to this pop star as their idol. However, following the recent Vanity Fair scandal, many inappropriate pictures of Miley have leaked onto the internet. Can this teen star be considered a role model for kids or will parents have to turn the channel when "Hannah Montana" airs?

In my opinion, although Miley Cyrus did take some inappropriate pictures, I still think the public expects too much from Miley. She is, afterall, a teen and a celebrity on top of that. No teen is 100% squeeky clean. They undergo a phase of rebelliousness and an urge to try what's forbidden and just let themselves have fun. Being a teen, I have certainly worn a bikini and I've also had sleepovers with my friends and I don't think this is anything out of the ordinary. However, when you're a pop star who's also a role model, wearing bikinis is apparently not allowed. Parents tend to be overly critical of people who are labeled as role models for kids and they expect them to be perfect or near perfect. Many parents are nervous and worried that Cyrus will become the next Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, or Vanessa Hudgens. With the excessively large amount of teen stars who have released nude photos or been reported drunk on the road recently, which parent wouldn't be worried that their kids might be watching something inappropriate. However, this doesn't change the fact that Miley Cyrus is just a kid, she's not perfect or anywhere near perfect. Yes, I agree that some of her photos appear too racy and are too suggestive, but I don't think the public should be too harsh on her and dig up her entire private life.

I think Miley will learn from her mistake this time and she has suffered the consequences. I can't vouch that Cyrus won't become the next Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton nor can I say that her photos in Vanity Fair were only "artistic," but I do believe that people should give her a second chance. If she keeps repeating her mistakes, then I have nothing to say in her defense. However, for the time being, both the public and the paparazzi should give Miley her private space and let her recover from this blow instead of prying into her private life to find something newsworthy.
