Miley Cyrus' 'SNL' Debut Suffers from Lame Skits

Cyrus is "Winning" as Bieber & Lohan, the Rest of the Show Falls Flat

Watching Miley Cyrus on "Saturday Night Live" was like enjoying ice cream, only to get a brain freeze. Delightful at first, as she impersonated Lindsay Lohan and Justin Bieber, then painful to suffer through the rest of the show. To be fair, the remaining "SNL" skits were lame enough to leave Cyrus at a disadvantage.

Saturday's show began with a take on what a Charlie Sheen hosted talk show would be like. Bill Hadler, as Sheen, is the host of "Duh! Winning!" He cites Christina Aguilera (Abby Elliott) as his band leader and cruises through interviews with fashion designer John Galliano (Taran Killam) and Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi (Fred Armisen). A buffet of last week's losers, who at the end of each interview declare themselves to be "winning!"

Cyrus enters as Lindsay Lohan, who already knows she's winning. She hits some zingers home with, "Things are great. My new movie, "Herbie," opened 68 months ago and the Los Angeles court house just gave me my own parking spot. Winning! Duh!" She then scores some clean baby urine.

Cyrus also had a "pretty cool" sketch in which she confronted her "SNL" doppelganger, Vanessa Bayer. Bayer, of course, did her bit as Miley. Which left the teen singer to play ... Justin Bieber. She was funny pretending to be to cool to for "The Miley Cyrus Show" catch-phrase. Even better was Cyrus' imitation of Bieber methodically going through his trademark wink and hand on chin poses. The fact that Cyrus smoking of salvia happens to be "perfectly legal" was also touched on.

The rest of the skits Cyrus performed in for her "SNL" debut were pretty much underwhelming, some bordering on boring. The French sketch involved a lot of weird dancing as she catches her guy kissing another girl. This segues into a "Beastly" spoof, where this week's hostess played the heroine. It predictably went against the movie premise and she is repulsed by his monstrous transformation. The comedic bit where he sits naked on mashed potatoes, while eating fried chicken, was less than funny.

Another random part of the show was a fake Rockabilly CD and facial cream infomercial. It was excruciating to sit through. The writing didn't even attempt to be funny. It was like the skit was supposed to float on the ludicrousness of the product combination. It didn't.

Cyrus also took a turn as a cruise ship lounge singer, who obviously didn't want to be in such "gross" people. So she sang about them being gross. This spot could have been saved by funny lyrics. Unfortunately, the lyrics were as flat as the sketches premise.
