Teens, Tweens and Chastity Brought to Forefront
Such a public pronouncement of Christian values and chastity from a Hollywood star did not slip by the American press without notice. In a city where young stars grow up too fast, such as Jamie Lynn Spears and her older sister, former Mousketeer Britney Spears, a public declaration of chastity until marriage is a statement against the fast and furious life that many in Hollywood succumb to, particularly those in the music and entertainment industry. Miley Cyrus is a virgin and intends to stay that way.
Jonas Brothers and purity rings
Miley Cyrus is not the first Disney star to come out and pledge chastity. The Jonas Brothers have publicly displayed their purity rings for over a year. According to a Huffington Post article from early last year, the boy band members have made pledges to themselves and God that they will remain pure until marriage. Since then, they've been mocked at an award ceremony and on South Park. Still, the Jonas Brothers have held true to their virginity pledge and still wear their purity rings proudly.
Purity Balls: Father/Daughter balls with focus on chastity
Have you ever heard of a purity ball? The purity ball movement is taking off in this country and a purity ball may be coming to a city near you. Some of the many cities hosting father/daughter purity balls include Peoria, Illinois; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Yuma, Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona; and even Hollywood, California! The cost to attend one of these purity ball events is minimal and gives teens and tweens an opportunity to spend a magical night with their fathers, where the messages of purity and chastity will be reinforced in a ceremony.
Described as a mix between a wedding and a prom, the purity ball movement has reached nearly all 50 states. Purity ball attendees can be as young as 4, but for the most part a purity ball is best suited for tween and teen girls age 12 and older. The cost associated with attending a purity ball is affordable, with most of the balls mentioned above costing $85 or less per ticket.

Post a CommentI'm sure it isn't entirely as I imagine but the whole purity ball idea evokes unnerving images of overprotective, slightly posessive fathers attempting to convince their daughters that they don't need sex - they can dance with their dad. Doesn't seem particularly convincing to me. Think I'd hop right on the nearest (non paternal) penis in that situation.
Virginity is important to some people and not to others. It's not important to me, I can barely remember it and I'm hardly oversexed totalling at 3 sexual partners in 8 years. I do know i was terible at it the first time though. I'd hardly want to save that for my future spouse on the wedding night.

I think it's good to hear people my age taking sex seriously and also having morals in a world that really doesn't care. I also follow a purity movement. It's nobody elses business so why should they slate personal choices?!?! I believe it's the strong people who can actually control themselves that can successfully lead this kind of life style.
But sex is so good, why not have it?
The simple truth is that that this "morally" ingrained concept of purity and chastity is, for lack of a better term, BS. It's makes me feel rather ill at times when I consider that I live in a world where otherwise rational, thinking human beings can honestly believe in a god who cares if humans have sex, seriously, consider the logicality of that. Sex is not something to be ashamed of. It is a bilogical induced phenomena that, like appezing hunger or thirst, produces pleasure. It is something that people should be able to enjoy. Obivously like any aspect of ones live people should consider the consequences of sex without protection and the emotional aspect of of it. However, Ignoring those urges do not make you a better person. You are not helping children in africa, or creating world peace, or inventing life changing technologies, because you don't have sex.

Why are we only focused on girls staying virgins in a father/daughter purity ball? Why not mother/son purity balls? Just goes to show that society is still dominated by old white men.
I adore Miley and think it's great that she wants to wait though I have to wonder how many people are really able to follow through with their pledges in the heat of the moment.

I just hope these kids can hold up under the remendous pressure of stardom and the constant barrage of adoration from the opposite sex (or even same sex!) Because if they fail, there will be quite the broo-ha-ha.
