Miley Cyrus Worst Influence, is Selena Gomez a Better Choice?

Tammy Lee Morris
A recent poll on AOL's Just So You Know website named Disney teen star Miley Cyrus as the worst influence on young girls, according to the website Monsters and Critics. The 18-year-old Cyrus, star of Disney's "Hannah Montana" earned this distinction (the second year in a row) thanks to her recent bad behavior including video of her smoking salvia and performing a lap dance at a cast party. The poll was conducted among girls aged 9 to 15 and Miley Cyrus beat out troubled starlets Lindsay Lohan and Demi Lovato, both of whom have recently been in rehab. As far as young role models go, Disney has offered up Cyrus, Lohan, Lovato and Selena Gomez in recent years, but are any of them fit for the job? As a mother of two girls, ages 9 and 11, I have to wonder.

While Cyrus attracted a huge following among young girls, as did Lohan at the height of her Disney popularity and Lovato currently, they seem to prove that celebrity teens stack up a lot of baggage that leads them to trouble.

My own daughters have never been fans of Miley Cyrus or Lindsay Lohan, but they are big fans of the talented Demi Lovato. Her recent personal issues (rehab, accusations of altercations with staff) have made me question their admiration for her but it is my hope that she takes this time after rehab to change directions in her life and go down a positive path--far removed from Cyrus and Lohan.

On the other side, my girls are also fans of another Disney star--Selena Gomez. The 18-year-old Gomez stars in Disney's "Wizards of Waverly Place" and has become an accomplished singer. Gomez has been active in promoting the charity of UNICEF and raising awareness and funds for Haiti's children through UNICEF.

Gomez has wisely kept her nose clean--at least in the public eye and has been known to go out of her way to meet her fans, which gives her a higher rating in my book. So far, Gomez has not been caught doing drugs, driving drunk, fighting, going into rehab or offering racy photos or inappropriate behavior which puts her ahead of Cyrus, Lohan and Lovato.

While I believe that Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan and especially Demi Lovato are beautiful and talented young ladies, they have chosen (or perhaps had it thrust upon them) the way of Hollywood and the well-worn path of fame that includes troubled lives. Thus far, Selena Gomez continues to be consistent in her lifestyle and her seeming understanding of her responsibility as a role model to her young fans. I hope that Gomez continues to rise to the top and continues to be a role model that my girls can be proud of, and one that I am not worried about my girls emulating.

1.) And the rumors about the other girls aren't stupid? Aside from Demi's fight on the plane, everything stated about her is about as unproven and phony as any other rumor about Selena or anyone else.
2.) That's not the point. The point is that scandals surround ALL of these people. Be it real or FAKE. This post is entirely bias. For a supposed doctor, you missed the subtext of my post. Wanna try again?
3.) The term “role model” is actually a flawed term and it doesn't take a therapist to see that Role models make mistakes too. And yes Your MAIN role model SHOULD be your parents. Not Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus or Demi Lovato. And certainly not the popular teenager who appears to do everything the right way. As far as I am concerned, this entire post is one big cop out for people to lazy to raise their kids.
4.) Also it doesn't take a child phsychologist to know that it's a PARENTS JOB to raise their kids and it's a PARENTS JOB to teach the

...I think in the world there are many worse things that happen, to be aware of what does or does not make an eighteen year old to become a role model. As I said a while ago, not for being famous is no longer a person and as a person still makes mistakes. Means?
Also, changing the subject a bit, there are things that I think this person who wrote this article missed a little. She has to do a distinction. Miley wasn´t either to rehab, and she hasn´t been to prison, all she did was go away of Disney because she wanted to grow up in show business. And although her fans are sad, they (and me) have to accept she wants to grow and we, the fans, we have to support it.
I do not think I forgot to say anything, just that the lady who wrote this article, try to be a role model for their daughters and that that weight doesn´t give it to someone else.
    Kisses

Look, I really I have nothing against any of these actresses. But the truth is that I think that Miley Cyrus isn´t like she is telling. The truth is that less than 4 years ago Miley was THE example to follow, and at that time everyone was talking about what Lindsay Lohan had done. And now suddenly as by magic, because she split with Disney, happens to be a person that supposedly take drug and drink beer at eighteen years of age. The reality of all this is that not Miley or Selena or Demi or Lindsay, or anyone is a good example to follow because, as Miley said in a note, nobody is perfect, ALL are human and make mistakes. And the reality is that there are kids who drink beer before the age of eighteen and nobody says anything. What happens is that they are not famous, so no one knows that. But the thing is that nobody understands, all the people believe that all stars have to be an example. But ... Why do people not look at his own navel and stop thinking about what others are doing? I

@John Freeman About your "scandals" from Selena...

    1) The teen pregnancy was just a stupid rumor.

    2) Any sane person with two working eyes can see that the nude photo was a fake.

Now about this whole "role model" thing, I like to say Selena sets the best example out of the three Disney girls. The term "role model" has been thrown around a lot. As a school therapist, I've been with kids who've set a better example amongst those who have problems with behavior. Teachers have called those good kids "role models". Still think the only role models should be the parents? As far as I'm concerned, this woman is actually doing the best she could.

You know what this article translates into? "I'm a lazy parent who is too ignorant to raise my kids. So I let Disney icons do it for me." You're pathetic.
