Milford, Connecticut Beaches Are Some of the Cleanest in the State

Roz Zurko
The beaches of Milford Connecticut are some of the cleanest in the state. Milford is a city on Long Island Sound and along with its vast private beaches it also boasts some beautiful public beaches.

Silver Sands State Park is Milford's biggest public beach. This beach boasts a board walk and it is a handicap accessible beach, offering easy access for people in wheelchairs. The highlight of this beach is the mile long sandbar that is exposed for about five hours during low tide that creates a path out to Charles Island. The Island is full of local legend including the buried treasure of Captain Kidd and many ghost sightings. You can read about Charles Island here. Silver Sands is easy to find, take exit 32, Bic Drive off of I-95 and follow the signs for Silver Sands State Park.

Gulf Beach is another public beach, that boasts the scenic views of the Milford Harbor. It is one of the smaller beaches in Milford, but if you like watching the sailboats and yachts gliding in and out of Milford Harbor, this would be the beach for you. The views not only include the harbor, but the north side of Charles Island is also in the horizon of this beach. The jetty darts out separating the beach from the harbor with a lighthouse beacon at the end to guide the ships into the harbor. To get to this beach take exit 38 off of I-95 and follow the Boston Post rd south until you come to Gulf Street. Gulf Beach is on Gulf Street which is just a few miles long. You cannot miss it.

Walnut Beach is a moderate size beach offering a long board walk out to the deeper water, which makes this one of the best fishing beaches in Milford. It has a view of Charles Island and is the next beach south of Silver Sands State Park. Exit 32 off I-95 will get you to this beach too. Follow the signs for Silver Sands State Park, but instead of turning into the Silver Sands parking lot, continue on to Walnut Beach.

Bayview Beach is just around the bend from Gulf Beach and this northern Milford beach brings a different view of Long Island sound than the southern beaches, which are the first three listed here. It is a smaller, quant beach with waves that are a little bigger than the southern beaches in Milford. To get to Bayview Beach, go past Gulf Beach, and continue on around the bend about a half mile to Deerfield Avenue. Follow Deerfield Ave to the end, which ends at Bayview Beach.

The remainder of Milford beaches are private beaches, which are filled with shore front homes.

Fishing In Milford is best off the Gulf Beach Jetty and Walnut Beach's long board walk. You will not be in the way of swimmers and sun bathers in these two areas.
