Military Begins Taking Action Against David Motari

For the first time in my adult life, this pacifist would like to thank the Marines. Why? You may be wondering. AFP reports that they have begun "process[ing]" David Motari for "separation." It appears that Motari may be dishonorably discharged, while a comrade also faces possible punishment. For those familiar with his actions, this should be cause for great relief. The wait has had many wondering if the actions taken by Motari would be treated in a serious manner.

Recapping for individuals unaware of the situation, David Motari's video from Iraq depicted a sickening event in which he tossed a live puppy from a cliff. The puppy could be heard yelping as it fell to its apparent death. If this doesn't elicit immediate disgust, one would have to be Motari.

This comes in the wake of renewed interest in animal welfare and animal rights. The case of Michael Vick has just begun to fade out. While a horrible incident, it could be argued that the case and coverage of Vick has done more to shed light on the plight of our non-human counterparts than any other event in recent memory. It is just a shame that such shocking events are the only way to urge individuals to speak up against such cruelty.

The positive aftereffect of the Vick trial can clearly be seen in the military's decision to take the Motari incident as seriously as they have, and hopefully this type of response will become the rule rather than the exception in our society. While it may be awhile until the rights of animals will come to be respected, a recognition of our duty to protect their welfare is certainly a step in the right direction. With that said, I strongly recommend that each individual take the opportunity to speak up in support of such actions as those taken by the military and take personal steps to always take the time to support the fight against cruelty.
