Military Careers: Employer of Choice?

Deciding to join the military can be a very difficult decision for someone to make. Especially with all the turmoil that the world is facing day in and day out. Many young people join the military for many different reasons. Whether it is for college money, travel, or just to gain life experience. Some people feel a deep desire to serve their country. The list is very large and varies for every person. Whatever their reason, people keep enlisting. People continue to make it a career and people continue to not make it to the magic twenty year mark where this a pension check. Eventually you have to ask yourself one question; is the military my employer of choice?

The military has become a good career opportunity for many people. For many people that are already in the military or considering joining, they realize the total compensation is not reflected in their base pay. You have to consider all the benefits of military service, not just your base pay. When you add up all of the benefits, regular salary, travel, and sense of duty you may find yourself asking the question is the military the career choice for me? There are definitely pros and cons to this question. However, I believe that the pros really outweigh the cons.

For example, for people that are married or have children one of their number one concerns is health insurance. Lets do a simply comparison. In the military your health care for you and your family is free if you choose. That means all doctor visits, check-ups, prescriptions, child births etc. are no cost to you. That is a pretty amazing coverage plan if you think about. In the civilian world I do not know of anywhere that gives you that same type of medical coverage. Plus the cost of health insurance can be outrageous. Especially when you consider monthly premiums, co-pays, and prescription drug costs.

How about the vacation policy? The military gives you thirty days of paid vacation each year. That is thirty days that you can spend somewhere other than work and still receive your paycheck. Many civilian companies do not to compare to that, even after years of service. You get this with the military the day you start, you start accruing your thirty days of paid vacation. Not to mention all the federal holidays that you still get to have off.

These are only two examples of the benefits of military service. It does, however, bring to life two of the most important aspects of military life. There are many factors to consider when making the decision if the military is for you. You have to be the one to make that choice, weigh the facts against each other. Personally, I believe that the military is the best deal out there today. It is a guaranteed paycheck with excellent benefits. Not too mention the bonus of being able to serve your country.
