I caught wind of this new website on January 17. I was intrigued enough at the time that I felt compelled to research and report.
I was hoping that the experiment would provide me with content for an article, either for or against Million Word Site and how it might be used to promote my Associated Content material.
If It succeeded, I saw the possibility of using it to drive page views.
The buy-in price was right. I had a few dollars in my PayPal account to reinvest in my home based business. So, for $16 I bought my business name, Hearten Soul, and added it to the Million Word Site. I threw together one web page with a link to send people to my business web site.
Within three days, the traffic from Million Word Site had referred almost 10% of all traffic that had ever visited my site since it launched last September. That can be compared with the less than 0.12% of traffic referred from Associated Content over the course of the entire 3 months that I've been a content producer.
A 10% increase in traffic may not mean much in some business circles. But, 10% of all traffic over the course of months that was referred in only three days seemed newsworthy to me.
It also sent me running back to Million Word Site to purchase my legal name, "Sharon Cohen", as well as the keyword phrase for my business, "virtual assistant". Purchasing my legal name, first and last, only cost me $8.00. The keyword cost an additional $16.00.
According to Itzhak Schier, site creator, the words I purchased are exclusive to me. Each word or phrase allows me to build and develop a linked mini-site of up to five pages. I can then link my word from the front page or internal search engine to my own site. As with a couple of words I have purchased, I can just hold on to them in anticipation of a system that will allow me to sell, auction off or rent my word to potential members who did not join in time to get the word of their choice at signup.
About five days into this experiment, I linked one of my Million Word Site pages to my Associated Content Profile page. As of January 24th 39.67% of the traffic to my sight was coming from Million Word Site. My traffic from Associated Content had "mysteriously" skyrocketed from 0.12% to 6.10% in a matter of days.
When I purchased the word "content"and linked it to my Associated Content profile, the traffic from Associated content to my website increase dramatically. As of January 30, 56.38% visited directly from Million Word Site and 10.27% came from Associated Content.
According to the Million Word Site FAQ, "You can use your word in any way you want, and really you can even redefine a word. From expressing your feelings for someone to just about any message you choose, you have the power to do what you want with your word so long as it's not nasty."
If you want to get people to know you by your original use or definition of a very common word, go ahead. And if you're using the word for your business, you are the only one who has that word, so you can use it to promote yourself as much as you want and however you want. No one else will have your word."
For instance, I can envision the first ingenius PartyLite distributor buying the word "candle". Imagine having her website, her stay-at-home business, being in the top results of the major search engines worldwide? (Too late for that one. She bought it today!)
Lawyers might consider purchasing words like litigation, defense, probate, wills, estates, or law suit. The possibilities are endless.
Originally, Itzhak Schier, a Chabad-Lubavitch Chassidic Jew from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, officially launched his Million Word Site by promoting it to members of his traditional Jewish community. That is why, among words pertaining to web hosting, jewelry, automobiles, chocolate and just about anything else, the site includes a plethora of Jewish religious terms such as kosher, Chanukah, and of course Chabad Lubavitch.
But Schier, makes it clear that "You don't have to be Jewish to be a part of the Million Word Site revolution!"
He also notes that his idea, while somewhat connected to the original Million Dollar Home Page, is "like a Ferrari compared to a horse and buggy" as far as pixel sites are concerned - and while his site is brand new, the initial response to it, as well as its functionality, bears out his rather audacious comparison.
I tend to agree in part yet not in whole at this stage of growth. I found it cumbersome to design my pages with limited tools for altering font sizes, colors, placement, etc. But - I'll settle for what I can get as I continue to watch traffic flock stampede my site!
As it now stands, the Million Word Site combines the best of search engine optimization, domain name selection, and social networking communities as its "reinvents the Web." I was obviously excited and pleasantly surprised when my pages on the Million Word Site showed up on the first page of major search engines, including Google, after only a few days!
Once the Million Word Site reaches one million words (in any languages that can be written in Latin characters), no further words will be added. This goal is expected to be reached in anywhere from nine to fifteen months now that the site is officially launched.
Schier himself does not hold words on his own account, other than his nickname of ZiQui which is linked to a mini-site that provides instructions for members.
Now, according to Itzhak Schier, who is known as "ZiQui Million" on his site: "I am making yet another push both to my own community and to the wider Internet world tonight as I get further and further toward critical mass. Most every user who joins ends up loving the site, and many of my users end up making additional purchases a day or even a couple of weeks after the original purchase. It's clearly only a matter of days, or even hours, before this thing soars."
There is one down side to this entire experiment:
Seeing "Al Gore's" name every single time I visit the Million Word Site home page has already become extremely annoying.
