The entire Midwest was expected to get hit hard starting today. Those expectations are largely being met, although Chicago had the early spotlight. Yesterday, projections had it being hit by 20 inches of snow, if not more.
However, the Milwaukee blizzard has the early headlines, as a projected 16 inches are set to fall when it's all over. It may rank among the worst in the city's history, although it still might not be the worst in the state of Wisconsin this winter. Polk County, Wisconsin received almost two feet in mid-December, including a few bits of "thundersnow"
There's still a long way to go for this storm to be record breaking. Over 28 inches once fell in the city, way back in March 1881. Even by this winter's standards, that would be very hard to reach, and this system likely won't do that much damage.
So far, the Milwaukee blizzard has already caused delays and early closings. Public schools let out 30 minutes early, and a blizzard warning is in effect from now until noon tomorrow. The heaviest snowfall is to come tonight, which could cause "life threatening conditions" according to the National Weather Service.
The entire Midwest is on high alert, due to this fast moving system. Although the Northeast has been the hardest hit region this winter, it may get a relatively small amount when this is all over. Meanwhile, the Midwest might be the region that's paralyzed for the next several hours.
In addition to the Milwaukee blizzard, the conditions in Chicago, most of Illinois, and much of Indiana, will be the most noteworthy. Yesterday, fears were that Chicago could get one of the worst snowfalls in its history, and it still might. However, it won't be going through these problems alone.
Sometimes, fears can be overhyped by weatherman and the experts. Because the Milwaukee blizzard is predicted to be "paralyzing" and "life threatening" those in Wisconsin hope the realty isn't as dire.
Residents are used to dealing with winter storms, but not often to this extent - yet the shoveling to come could help pass the time until the Super Bowl.
