Gregory Todd
Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a very unfortunate and painful illness for both patients and their loves ones. It have shown that physical activities, lifestyle, and nutrition play a significant role in Alzheimer prevention. If your family has a history of AD or other types of dementia, it does not necessarily mean that you will have the same illness in the near future too. There are preventive measures that one can take now while you are young, to avoid Alzheimer's Disease.

If you want to prevent AD then you have to exercise your mind. The brain is like a muscle, it needs exercise to improve its physical well being. Keep mental skills sharp by playing chess, doing crossword puzzles, and regularly socialize. People who have hobbies or jobs that require much thinking are more likely to combat Alzheimer's.

Your risk of developing Alzheimer's Disease is higher if you have family with the same disorder, not for genetic reasons alone, but more because of the lifestyle that tends to be common among family members. Offspring of parents who are smokers may of course been exposed to smoke too or may develop the same habits.

So what can one to prevent having AD as their family members have? You can start living a healthier life today. You can overturn some of the negative effects of past harmful lifestyle choices, poor eating habits, and lack of mental and physical exercise. Studies have recently established that our brain is capable of repairing cells and neurotransmitters meaning that one's cognitive function and memory can be enhanced even at the late age of 60 or 70. Seriously consider what steps you need to take today, and prevent you and your family from the agony of Alzheimer's Disease. Here are some guidelines:

Have a Balanced Nutrition. Start eating right today. Almost all diseases are caused by too much or too little of such substance in one's body, and this is usually caused by not getting enough nutrition due to poor eating habits. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that help protect our mind as well as our body. People generally think that fat is bad for our health, but a certain type of fat called Omega 3 is the good kind, and may be able to prevent Alzheimer's.

Take Supplements to augment nutritional needs. If we aren't too careful about what we eat, we aren't going to get enough nutrition. We can take supplements that have essential fatty acids and minerals that can improve our cognitive function.

Exercise Regularly. Exercise does not only improve blood and oxygen circulation to the brain, it can also rouse production of the molecules that help the body repair cells and nerves. This was declared in a report for the National Institutes of Health.

Cut Down on Cholesterol. Cholesterol blocks our arteries and veins restricting blood flow which can cause a heart attack. Alzheimer's Disease symptoms may appear in patients who have had a stroke that resulted to neurotransmitter brain damage. Watch your cholesterol levels to prevent having a stroke which can lead to brain damage and dementia.

Stretch Your Mind. Muscles can be stretched and flexed, so can our minds too. Exercises are not only physical, mental exercises will help prevent Alzheimer's. Back in school we had to read our books and review them once or twice to make sure we can easily recall the details on the day of the exam. That is how we were able to memorize dates, facts, and figures. Try to do that at least once a day, try practicing to recall facts or figures you have come across earlier in the day. Playing mind games like chess, games of the generals, crossword puzzles and the likes, will also help keep you mentally sharp.

These are fairly simple and easy steps that can help prevent Alzheimer's Disease from robbing your precious memories. If you want to enjoy your life after retirement age, then you best do what you can to keep your mind and body healthy today.
