Mindy McCready and Roger Clemens: Guys Do it All the Time

Amy Cox
Roger Clemens has faced yet another setback in the court of public opinion. The New York Daily News has reported the Clemens had a 10-year relationship with country singer Mindy McCready, which began when she was fifteen 15 he was 28. While Clemens had admitted to a relationship, he claims it was only a friendship and not sexual. That is not stopping news media from speculating about the nature of the relationship.

Roger Clemens has spent the last several months battling to save his public image. Once respected for his dominance of batters while on the mound, he has watched as his personal life has unraveled. It began with his former trainer, Brian McNamee, accusing Clemens of steroid use. In an effort to negate those charges, Clemens both testified before Congress and filed a defamation of character lawsuit against McNamee. With the latest allegations of his relationship with Mindy McCready, many are wondering the effect they will have on the lawsuit.

A relationship with McCready, sexual or not, does not have anything to do with steroid use or defamation of character. The lawsuit Clemens has filed and the latest scandal are separate entities. While it may show poor taste on Clemens' part, it does not show that he did nor did not use steroids. If the intention of the lawsuit was to find out if Clemens was a good guy or a bad guy, McCready could be used as ammunition. That is not the case, though. It is a lawsuit about one thing, and one thing only, which is steroid use.

Clemens is suing McNamee because he claims he was wrongfully accused of steroid use. The accusations of steroids have led to Clemens' major league career and successes being questioned. There is a good chance he will not make it to the Hall of Fame due to the scandal.

Roger Clemens is not as concerned with personal defamation as he is with professional defamation. While the Mindy McCready incident will surely affect public opinion to an extent, it will not hurt his baseball legacy. The public is used to athletes behaving in ways that they should not.

If Roger Clemens did, in fact, have a sexual relationship with Mindy McCready, it still should not affect the outcome of his lawsuit. The lawyers need to keep the focus on steroid use and off of sex. It is the job of both judge and jury to look at the facts of the case and wear blinders when it comes to other things. Even if they have a low opinion of Roger Clemens, they need to keep that from factoring in. a decision must be made based on the facts of the case, not on media speculation.

    Amy,

The lawsuit involves the tarnishing of Clemem's reputation. He must show that his reputation is/was unsullied until his former trainer implicated him in steroid use. If it is proven that he did indeed have an improper relationship with Mindy, then his case is so full of holes that you could drive a truck it. That is assuming Brian McNamee can't prove his story. I believe he can. I believe Andy Pettite and I believe McNamee. Roger can be denied admission to the Hall Of Fame based on character. It is the rules of admission that voters are to take personal character into account. He is not going to see the HOF in his lifetime. The evidence is just strong against him.
